Q. A friend of mine told me that if you run Linux on my net book it is a lot quicker than windows. He said that I can try it out Linux before I erase windows and install Linux by doing a "live disk?" I don't know how to do that. I have a acer aspire one with windows and I don't have a CDROM drive I only have USB ports and USB memory stick. How would I do this?
A. You will need a Live CD and a computer with a CD drive to create the bootable USB. You can follow my instructions here:

A. i really don't understand your question.
You can install most of the programs anywhere including flash drives.
When prompt to choose the file directory chose the one where you want to install it.

Thank You Laptop Repair for the quick response I will look into which programs come in a "portable" version.

A. Depends on the program and it's dependencies. Some programs require common libraries, some programs will install "common" libraries that they need, even if no other installed programs use the same dependencies. Similar to how Windows software will install files in the System directory, and a Common Application directory, as well as the individual program directory.
So, in theory, yes. You could install some software to a thumb drive, and run it from the Live CD. However, it would depend on whether there was a portable version of the program. http://portablelinuxapps.org/
