How to erase everything off my computer and download linux?

Q. I am not a very computer literate person. I understand a few things though. Anyways, my current desktop runs Windows Vista, is 4-5 years old, and slow as hell. I'd like to get Linux installed because I've heard very good things about it, and I'd like to get rid of my Windows Vista operating system and everything else on the computer (I have nothing irreplaceable on it). Can someone tell me how to install linux and delete everything in the simplest terms possible?

A. Way to go!! I'm here to help i did that about a year ago on my older XP Laptop. Go to the Linux: Ubuntu site, and download the Ubuntu 32 bit, not 64 because your computer most likely is not setup for a 64 bit OS. Anyways, after you burn the image to a CD/DVD insert into computer, and linux ubuntu gives you the option to install it alongside windows, or by itself. The option by itself will completely erase and format your hdd for you then install Ubuntu on there. The reason I'm telling you Ubuntu out of all the linux platforms is because it's a great and stable OS that's made for newbies to learn, and enjoy it. It will speed the hell out of your computer, and you no longer need to worry about firewalls, or spyware, adware, or trojans! Send me an email if you need anymore help along the way. sanantoniogyuy07@yahoo.com and i'll give you a few pointers to get you on your way

How can i download Linux without creating a live cd?
Q. This is for win98, if i cant do that how can i get a free virtual PC for win 98.

I am trying to update the OS on this machine with no success.

This is a project i want to do strictly online to see if it can be done.

Any suggestion?

A. Yes, you can install Linux from inside windows 98 with wubi.
http://wubi-installer.org/

It installs and uninstalls like a regular windows program. Just restart your computer and chose "ubuntu". Otherwise windows will start normally.

Your computer will also need 256MB of memory and 5 GB harddisk space, if you choose "Ubuntu" in the installer. (That's the normal installation.)

But because your computer is older, I suggest choosing "Xubuntu" in the installer. That way it should only need between 64MB to 192MB.

It is leaner and faster because it doesn't have the fancy graphics effects.

When I download Linux Mint as my operating system, will i still have all my files, pictures and music?
Q. Will I still have music, pictures and software still on my computer memory?

A. If you are careful not to wipe out the drive where your files are currently stored, then you will still have them. For example, if you are currently using Windows and it's on the C: drive, then you can use the Linux installer to wipe out the other partitions (for example wipe the D: drive). Data on C: will remain and will be accessible from within Linux.

There's always the risk that you'll screw up so it's always best to have backups (on a USB stick or CD or the internet... so even if you delete the entire hard disk you will have the important files stored on a separate media). The partition that you'll dedicate to Linux will be wiped out and won't be available next time you boot to Windows, only Linux can use it.
