Q. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 it uses IDE Hard Drives and a IDE CD drive.
Please do not say to get a SSD because the pc i have is 8 years old and is not compatible with SSD it can only use IDE not SSD or SATA.
The PC uses DDR memory and reigh now it has 512MB of memory i wish to upgrade it to 2GB is this possable and will it make it faster when starting up and writing word Documents and going on the internet? Now it takes way to long to even open a basic word document.
Thes OS is Linux Ubuntu version 12.04
Memory 512MB
HDD 40GB
DVD NO
CD YES
SATA NO
SSD NO
IDE YES
I just want to be able to get on my pc without any problems.
Wish i could afford the Alienware X51 $799.00 version but on 50.00 per month it wont happen. I am currently saving up for the X51 but i have calculated that it could take 15 months or more.

A. You should be able to stick a SATA controller in an empty PCI slot.
You'll also probably need a decent graphics card to get ubuntu to work well.
Anyways, by the time you do that you could replace the core components for $300 (six months), (can see results in three if you use a board with an ide connector and risk using the old power supply with it)

And then either a SSD or terrabyte drive. $100
That's not the only combo that will work, but it's worth looking into.
In the meantime install and use the lxde desktop enviroment, which should at leas be passingly usable on that system.
But if you got to have it right now

How do I install puppy linux as a dual boot?
Q. I have installed Ubuntu and Linux mint as dual boot many times on various computers but i have never experimented with puppy linux. Is it pretty much the same to install puppy linux as a dual boot as it is to install Ubuntu?
A. Normally Puppy is booted from a CD or USB stick
It doesn't need to be installed because it will save all your files in a small file that will live happily on any partion on your hard drive
I have (a while back) multi-booted an fully installed version of puppy, ubuntu and XP using grub and don't recall any problems - each had its own partition on a single drive

How do I run a web browser from linux command line?
Q. I an VERY new to linux. I have installed Fedora 5 in text mode. I have a Linux book and am trying to slowly learn linux. So from the console, or command line, how do I run a web browser. Also how do I run the X Windows System?
A. If you installed in text mode, maybe you didn't install X. You probably have a text mode browser. Try lynx or elinks. If the startx command doesn't work, try "yum install x-window-system". By the way, Fedora 5 is old. The current version of Fedora is 9.
