LOST IN FREEKING UBUNTU land. help is appreciated as well as required. Thank you.

A. There is a ubuntu add on called Wine, download that. It is supposed to allow the running of windows applications on Ubuntu. It works, and can be found at http://www.winehq.org/ . For more info in it, also see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine .

I want to host an online Poker Game, and i want to sell usernames and passwords where customers can buy them?
Q. Hey, I want to host an online poker game where I can control from my computer or online administration, the game should be real money game but each user will have his own prepaid username and password, I want to host the game using a VPS hosting, where can I find a good game other than PokerMavens that can do the same, preferably Linux-Game...I'm willing to pay good price for the good game

Does every game on linux work on every distro?
Q. I wanted to try out Linux. I wanted to either get Fedora or Ubuntu (Mostly Fedora). So I'm a PC gamer, and I wanted to try out the Steam on Linux so my question is:
Most of the games on Steam say that they require one of the three distros Ubuntu, Fedora, and Mint.
Some other games say they only require one (usually Ubuntu) which sort of makes me think that means thats the only one that it will work on. So if it list just one of the distro does that really mean it can't at all run on any other Distro?
By the way the Linux game I'm looking at is Serious Sam 3, which is one of those games that say they only require ubuntu.

A. It depends on how it's packaged.

A game developer that just releases a .deb with Ubuntu in mind just hung Fedora and SUSE users out to dry because they use .rpm packages. Of course if the source code is available one could always compile the game manually, but that doesn't mean that every "Linux program" works on every distribution by default, as they obviously don't.

Steam for Linux is still in Beta, so things are still up in air, as you've noticed with the varying system requirements; it often seems that Valve is really targetting the Ubuntu and Ubuntu-derivative segment because it thinks that's where the biggest user-base is, but I'm sure Fedora and the other rpm distros won't be completely ignored.

Linux users if I use a CD that came with a book to install linux and it is missing programs?

Q. Like let's say movie player, or music player, or simple things like calculator, or some sort of notepad. Where can I download them that will work with linux?

A. Linux will generally have a program like Software Center or Synaptic to install the files from their repositories. You open this and type in a search for what you may not have, check the file and click apply and it will install the software for you. There isn't any reason to be doing terminal commands unless it is a file that is not in the repository and to install from the terminal, you must be logged in as root, not user. Most versions of Linux disable the root account to prevent people from messing the operating system up. Some of what you have mentioned are part of the install for the desktop environment being used and don't need to be installed by the user. You can always download a Linux LiveCD and run it in memory to see if it is what you want to install.

How to remove an OS from a multiboot?
Q. For a while now I've been running Windows 7 in a multiboot with Vista and Linux Mint. I'd like to get rid of Vista while keeping a Mint/Win7 dual boot. Is there a way to do this?

A. Depends on which OS is controlling the boot menu. If it is Windows, you will find a text file in the root of your computer called boot.ini. Open it in notepad and you will see the menu options. Remove the line for Vista and resave the file. (Back up the old first just in case...)

I do not know if Win 7 as the option, but with early versions of Windows you can edit the boot.ini using msconfig. Start > Run > type in: msconfig

Go to the boot.ini tab

Run the "check all paths" and it will update the boot.ini to reflect the current configuration of your computer.

How do I maintain my privacy on a Shared Network? I use Linux/Fedora.?

Q. I use someone's network in my home (roomate's) and my system is Linux/Fedora. How do I make sure that someone cannot look and see what sites i'm visiting, my passwords etc? A step by step would help.

A. First, always use secure http for web sites that have accounts (username/password). Your password will be encrypted (usually via openssl). So no one snooping your local home network can see any login passwords. Likewise, always use secure shell (ssh) for shell logins. Same reason.

The IP addresses of the sites you are visiting, however, will be available to anyone snooping your network connection. You might be able to hide those through a proxy service, but unless they encrypt the target IP address (or URL) you can still be tracked by your room mate.

Look into "Tor", for example.

How to setup in linux fedora?
Q. I have just installed linux fedora and im trying to print something but cant.My printer is a Canon M240 and when i hook it up to fedora it say no printer drivers for this printer is there anyway to get the drivers

A. i am sure someone in some linux forums will have a compatible driver available.
that being said.... linux like ANY other os will require proper configuration before it utilizes the true benifits of a linux system and become secure

can i install ubunto over the previously installed windows 7 and fedora, and is it safe to do that?
Q. i installed windows 7 and then installed Linux fedora. and they are running cool. now i want to install Ubuntu. so can i install Ubuntu over the Linux fedora??
and is it safe to do this, thanks in advance to you guys :)

A. Yes, whenever you choose the type of installation, select run both systems and thats it

How many different families of operating systems exist in unix?

Q. I know that Mac OS, Linux, Open Solaris, and BSD are related to Unix, are there any other operating systems that are based on or related to unix? Please don't not include variants of any of that already mentioned operating systems, such as FreeBSD, Or any Linux-based distros.

Also, is there any other family of operating systems separate from Unix?
I guess what I am looking for is an OS which could be run on a modern computer.

A. PalmOS (hand helds)
Amiga (think they are still making a niche OS)
VMWare - more of a container, but it could be seen as a specialized OS
Brew (used on cell phones)
VAX
Mainframe
IBM OS2

** Edit **
Not sure why I didn't just go here in the first place but here is a big list of OSs:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_operating_systems

What are the fundamental difference between Windows,MacOS, UNIX, and Linux operating systems for personal comp?
Q. What are the fundamental difference between Windows,Mac OS,UNIX,and Linux operating systems foe personal computers? what Unique do mainframe operating systems have?

A. Well, I could list about 50 differences per operating system. But if you want the fundamental ones, here they are:

Windows:
* Huge market share, so the most support from third-party hardware and software vendors, including graphics-intensive games and other niche software.
* Comes preinstalled on almost all consumer computers sold.
* Securing is difficult but possible (definitely use a limited user account all the time, no matter how inconvenient)

Mac:
* Pretty to look at (sturdy, polished exteriors; smooth animation, high-resolution icons)
* Expensive
* Well-integrated experience if you go all-Apple (Apple TV, Cinema Display, Airport Extreme, iPhone, etc.)

Linux:
* Extremely flexible, as small or large as you want, live CD/USB or installed, built from the ground up or pre-built
* As long as you don't have obscure software needs, software installation is the easiest you can get
* No activation codes or fees
* Very few preinstalled options (or ones that are badly configured or not configured at all), so you may have to troubleshoot some compatibility issues

That's pretty much it. I could definitely go into the details more, but the last time I did that, Yahoo! Answers cut me off.

What is Solaris 11 like, and is it good anyways?
Q. I know it is a UNIX operating system, and that it came out very recently. I have some questions about it. Is it open source/free? How does it work? What can it do? What skill level do you need to use it? What is the GUI like? And I am doing a science fair project about what operating system is the best. I already have Windows, Mac, and Linux down, now all I need is to find an OS to represent UNIX. If you have any other suggestions tell me.

A. The GUI used is Gnome 2.

It's main purpose is that it is optimized for SPARC processors and the ZFS filesystem. It is designed for high I/O, many threads, and stability. It's ideal to run databases on.

If you want a more generic Unix system, freeBSD is a good one to try.

How do you remove a Linux OS to install windows?

Q. I purchased a "used" computer from my company and it has a Linux OS on it. I would like to wipe it clean and install windows, but not sure how. Is there an easy way to do this?
I tried starting up with the windows 7 disk, in hopes it would just "over ride" the other, but no luck. The current OS is uBuntu...not sure if that makes a difference or not.

A. If you have a cd/dvd of the operating system you want, just put in on your optical drive
turn on your computer, press F8 or whatever button to change start up drive, change booth drive to your optical drive, save setting, exit and reboot.
Your computer will read your cd/dvd and will prompt you.
It will find your hard drive and ask you if you want to install it on that drive. (default C drive).
If you have a huge hard drive, you can partition your C drive to whatever size you want.
I prefer to assign only 50 Gig for drive C. Once the operating system is installed, I partition the remaining drive and use it as storage drive.
It fill format the drive and install your operating system.
Just follow the instructions of the install prompts.

If you are still having problems, use a separate computer, search for Hiren's boot cd in .iso format. Download and burn on cd/dvd. Just boot the cd in your used computer. It has a lot of partitioning programs you can choose to reformat your hard drive.

How does the Linux OS actually work?
Q. I have been researching the Linux OS, but I am still confused as to how the Linux OS actually works. Please explain this short and simply as I do tend to get flustered and it is one of those days. Thanks in advance.

A. Can you be more specific about what it is that confuses you? Linux is a pretty big OS (which comes in many flavours), so explaining it 'short and simply' is not easy...

What is the BEST Linux OS to use in conjunction with Windows 7 Professional OS?
Q. I very much like Linux and am very new to Windows 7 Professional OS (that's the reason for all the Windows 7 Professional questions on here, which I do appreciate everyone's helpful responses). Can you recommend a Linux OS that would complement Windows 7 Professional OS? A computer technician friend recommend Ubuntu. Thank you in advance, my friends, as I truly appreciate your helpfulness. :-)

A. Dual boot Ubuntu.
You will still be able to access and edit your Windows files from Ubuntu which will make the eventual transition to a Windows free world easier.
Imagine never having to pay for software again, thats life with Ubuntu.

Can anyone help me with installing programs on Linux?

Q. I dont have internet on the computer i have linux on, am i screwed or is there still a way?

A. Some software is distributed in "Source form". This means you download a file containing all the source code for the application you want to install, unpack it, and compile it on your system. Compiling is the process of turning the source code into an executable binary. It is a fairly straight forward process.

Typically applications you must compile from source will come as a ".tar.gz", ".tar.bz2", or ".zip" file.

You'll probably want to operate from inside your home directory. If your user is (for example) username, your home directory will be /home/username/. Downloaded your zip file containing install files to /home/username/src. If you do not have a src directory, you can create it with the following "mkdir" (make directory) command:

Code:
mkdir /home/username/src/
So, we have our source package in /home/username/src/.

Change to the /home/username/src/ directory with the "cd" (change directory) command like so:

Code:
cd /home/username/src/
Use the "ls" (list directory contents) command, to see the file is present:

Code:
ls

We now need to unzip the zipped file, this is done differently depending on the file extension.

for files ending in .tar.gz, use:

Code:
tar -zxvf <filename>
(replacing <filename> with the name of the file).

for files ending in .tar.bz2, use:

Code:
tar -jxvf <filename>
for files ending in .zip, use:

Code:
unzip <filename>
You should now have a new directory, containing all of the source files. To confirm it exists, and to get its name, use the "ls" command again.

Code:
ls
we now need to go into the new directory, so use the cd command:

Code:
cd <directory>

This is where things will differ. Some packages will have an INSTALL or README file which will contain installation instructions. use "ls" to see if the software has an install or readme file. If it does have one, you can use the "more" command to read it, like so:

Code:
more INSTALL
Generally, the final 3 stages are as follows:
- Configure the installation
- Compile the software
- Install the binaries

The pre-installation configuration is done by executing ./configure:

Code:
./configure
This will perform some requirements testing on your system, and create a "Makefile" which will explain to the "make" utility how the software should be compiled.

The next stage is to compile the software, this is done using "make". When you run "make" it will read the instructions in the Makefile and build the application binaries.

Code:
make

The final stage is to install these binaries, ie, copy them to a more permanent location. Typically only the "root" user can do this, so you will need to swich to the root user with the "su" command:

Code:
su
Once you are root, install the binaries using the "make" command, followed by "install", like so:

Code:
make install

How can I open a zip file on a Linux OS?
Q. I reaceently installed the LInux Fedora OS in my PC and now the sound is not working, does anybody know what can I used and or do to open a zip file?
Thanks in advance

A. There is a program called zip or unzip. Do a yum install zip or yum search zip from the command line (as root) then unzip the file using that.

Why wont my downloaded version of wordpress work?
Q. I downloaded wordpress from wordpress.org and it downloaded it as a zipped folder, I unzipped it but it is still just alot of documents and folders and files and I have no idea how to set it up. I know other people have had this problem, any advice?

A. you need a running server (apache/php/mysql). [apache is reccommended, but not required)
It might be easier to sign up for a free hosting plan, so you don't have to think about the server-part

However if you'd prefer to have wordpress on your own computer:
http://php.net/manual/en/install.php
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/windows.html
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/windows-installation.html

I took it that you're a windows user, if you have a linux distribution on you computer, you should be able to find these software packages in the repositories

What's the difference between the cd and dvd versions of Knoppix?

Q. I want to use Knoppix, just to play around with linux a little. But I noticed there are two versions of it. CD and DVD. Obviously the DVD version is much, much, larger. Besides the obvious size difference, what separates the CD version from the DVD on.

A. the dvd version has more software,

knoppix is not really a good idea if you want to 'mess' with linux, you can access your normal system and delete thing that will make it useless,

best idea is install virtualbox

http://www.virtualbox.org/

then download and install one of the free distro's in a virtual machine, then you can 'mess' till you brake it, without breaking your host (normal) system

Any mac users out there upset with their machines?
Q. Obviously not a scientific study, but I want to know any stories about people who regret buying a mac. I've run Windows since I gave up on OS/2, and I've played with Linux, but I've never considered buying a mac until recently. Anybody sad that they bought a mac?

A. There are 2 desktops and 2 laptops in this house. One desktop runs Windows because I have one highly-specialized piece of software that'll only run on Windows. It only gets used when I need that bit of software. One laptop runs Windows solely because I haven't gotten around to installing Linux on it yet and so it lies fallow waiting for better days. The other desktop runs Linux (the second most used computer) and my most-used computer (this laptop, in fact) is an Apple. I love my Apple! I love my Linux box for different reasons, but after finally getting my hands on this MacBook Pro, I really don't want to use another computer. Ever. I'll always have Linux boxes around, but I'll also always have an Apple from here on in.

How to find what video file format a file is apart from the extension of the file itself?
Q. For example, I have an avi file....It plays in linux using SMPlayer front end...but the video does not play on Windows (VLC player)....the audio is heard though.
When you play the file in VLC Player, and press CTRL-I, it will show up the information and it will also show the encoding of the video file, for example: XVID, etc

A. I have been wondering about this myself, and have had very little luck finding a simple answer, if any at all. I myself have .avi files that when changed to the .mpeg extension somehow still play properly, yet cannot be burned using Nero, etc. as either one.

What is the best linux distribution for an older computer?
Q. Which linux distribution would be the best to install on a older computer that still woks fine, like: 866mhz, 512ram, 80GB hard drive?
I mean, so I can reuse an older computer for basic tasks such as browsing the web, writing documents, store some music and pictures.

A. Something like Ubuntu or Debian would work fine.

How can i get 'RED HAT' LINUX for free? Can i get a cd for free by post?or should i download it from the net?

Q. Can i get a CD containing 'RED HAT' LINUX by post, free of any charge as it is an open source software?? Or should i download it from the internet? Please give the details........ ( i want the red hat version of linux itself)
can you give me the links...., so that i can get them?

A. You seem to know the name RedHat but not enough about it to not ask this question. To the person who said that RedHat no longer exists and then turned around and said it is RedHat Enterprise, doesn't that sound a little silly? To answer the question you asked, YES AND NO. No you cannot get RedHat for free, it went commercial quite awhile ago. However they continued on with the home-user version renaming it Fedora to distinguish it from the commercial version. And what exactly do you mean "...free of any charge as it is an open source software??" Where did you get the idea that open-source is synonymous with free? I bet you've heard about the free software movement and think all open-source software is free. The GPL ( http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html ) states that a program with this license is copy-lefted. This means it is free to redistribute and change the software as you see fit, even to sell it (yes, sell someone else's program for your own profit as long as you leave the license intact and allow the people that buy or receive the software from you to do the exact same thing. I hope that this clarifies things a little for you. I didn't mean to sound so harsh, it was not my intention.

What is the maximum amount of memory Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 supports?
Q. I've searched the red hat website and all I could find is that RHEL 5 supports up to 2 CPUs. I'm trying to find out what is the maximum amount of memory RHEL 5 can support. Please list any websites where I can get more information about linux hardware.

Thank you,

A. RHEL 5 supports unlimited memory! If you are running it as a desktop with Multi OS then its only 4Gigs. Cool ain't it.
http://www.redhat.com/rhel/compare/

And by that same chart.. it will support up to 8 CPU sockets!
If you have 8 sockets and quad core,, then it will indeed support 32 CPU's!

And for hardware check these

Ok, I found telnetd. Thanks all !

What is the best and easiest-to-manage Linux OS / POP / SMTP server for a novice Linux administrator?

Q. I am a novice Linux server admin (I can us SSH, vi, cron, and understand config files), but I am willing to learn. However, I do not have hundreds of hours to research and learn all the ins-and-outs of Linux. I need something fairly turnkey:

What is the best server software that will do all or most of the following:
- POP3 server
- SMTP server
- Webmail server (with good standard features, like WYSIWYG editor, attachments, etc.)
- Web-based end-user configuration tools
- Anti-virus
- Anti-spam (blacklists and whitelists & RBL support required, spam filtering logic a plus)
- Authentication data stored in a database for easy management.
- POP-before-SMTP authentication

Similarly, I need to pick the best Linux OS to run this puppy on. I would like an OS with a wizard install, and one with adequate security for a publicly accessible server.

Last of all, it would be great if all of the above would be freely available for commercial use.

Thanks for your help!

A. There is a fantastic tutorial on qmail at the links below. qmail is very secure and is widely used. Many developers have ported it to the application extensions you want to use, like WebMail, anti-virus and anti-spam.

This should at least get you started.

Good luck.

What is the budget version of the windows home server?
Q. same function but cheaper

A. According to Google the price ranges from $140-$180. The low price listed was from newegg.com I am talking about the software only here. If you don't have a PC to run it on your going to have to pay for that too.

A cheaper version of the same functionality would be a Linux distribution. There are some companies that offer a free implementation that does the many of the same things offered by the windows home server. But I suspect the windows home server offers wizards and other turnkey functionality that is often missing in a Linux solution.

After looking at the information provided I think you would still have to buy a URL and static IP address or else rent space on a dynamic URL dns as well as have permission to be using your access to run an internet server.

One of the Linux links claims that windows home server is nothing but a print and files sharing server. I believe that is wrong because when I read the fine print it refers to things that I interpreted to mean a web server was being made available on the internet.

Considering how expensive most Windows Servers are, this is a very low price (most Windows servers start at $500+)

Backup to a home network via Internet?
Q. Which NAS allows me to backup my laptop to my home hard drive via the internet?
For example, I travel to Europe and want to backup to my NAS which is at home in Asia. Is it possible to backup this way? If so which company is recommended?
Netgear, WD, Synology, QNAP, ...?

Thanks

A. Well it isn't so much a specific NAS tool as it is the ability for your ISP to allow incoming traffic of this kind. You might want to use something like FreeNAS or TurnKey Linux and then set up a VPN on your home network. When you are away, simply access your VPN and you will have access to your NAS just as if you never left your home network, plus VPN typically adds some privacy too.

A. Chrome devices have Flash support built-in, but they do not support Java or Silverlight. If you need Java, Silverlight, or other plug-in support, there are virtualization and remoting options you can use for Chrome devices. See the chapter on Remote Access and Virtualization in the Chrome Devices for Education Technical Planning Guide: http://www.google.com/support/enterprise/static/chromeos/docs/admin/en/chrome_devices_for_edu.pdf

What are the benefits of using Google Chrome and what are the benefits of using Internet Explorer 9?
Q. My friend told me to switch over to Google Chrome, which i did. I am a Internet Explorer user and I upgraded Internet Explorer to version 9 and it seems like its the same as Google Chrome. What would be the benefits of the two?
Well internet explorer 9 too shows most visited web sites and is insanely fast lol. I guess one point would be security since internet explorer is a widely used browser.

A. Firefox 4 is even faster than IE and Chrome, over 9 million downloads in two days and it's available for Windows XP, which IE 9 isn't.

Chrome and IE isn't nearly as customizable as Firefox, Firefox has tens of thousands of add-ons, persona, themes etc.

Another great thing is it's available for Windows, OS X and Linux, one can auto-sync so all versions of Firefox are the same across different hardware. :)

Also with Firefox you don't have to worry if Microsoft, Apple or Google is spying on you, the code is open for people to see. (and improve on)

And Firefox with add-on's runs extremely fast on single core computers with 2.3 GHz and a mere 512K of RAM under Linux, so the "memory" issues is because of Windows bloat, PC vendor installed junk and anti-malware, not Firefox.

I use Windows in VM all the time, it always needs more memory than anything else I run. Nearly 2GB, that's with the eye candy turned way down. Just about all new Windows PC's today need their RAM bumped up right from the gate, especially after updating.

How do you get the task bar/start menu to stay when on google chrome?
Q. My taskbar is on auto-hide. Whenever on my desktop, it shows when i move the mouse to the bottom. But when i'm in google chrome, it won't show when i move to the bottom and it's really frustrating because i'm constantly switching between programs. How do I fix it w/o changing my taskbar to lock? I like it at auto-hide.

A. Are you using Microsoft Windows or Linux either a MAC? If you working on Windows this might be an issue with the system. Not with a Google Chrome whatsoever.

How can I play steam games on my Mac?

Q. I have Boot Camp with the steam games, but i want to know if i can somehow play them while running OS X. I have the newest version 10.5.7 if that helps anything. I have Parallels and Vmware Fusion but they suck at playing games. Please Help ( If you don't know what steam games are they are just normal PC games that are easier to keep up with.)

A. You probably want to look at CrossOver Games, a WINE-based system that allows you to play Windows games on Linux or Mac computers without purchasing a copy of Windows. COG is around $40.

See: http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxgames/

Another option would be to purchase and install a copy of Windows under Boot Camp, assuming you're running OS X 10.5 ("Leopard") or higher. You'd have to reboot your Mac into Windows. Downsides: You will have to re-partition your hard drive, making room for Windows, and of course, you also have to purchase a copy of Windows. Upsides: Since you're actually running Windows, any game you install/run should operate no differently than if you were playing it on a non-Mac Windows PC.

One more approach would be to try a virtual PC solution such as Parallels or VMWare Fusion. See the websites for these products to see what their capabilities are, and how likely they are to run your games.

http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/
http://www.parallels.com/

With Parallels or VMWare Fusion, you'll need to purchase the application, plus a copy of Windows.

How to get diner dash to play linux?
Q. Have linux on my computer i want to play diner dash... i have tried wine and all that crap currently wine wont open anything so i am very unhappy. i have also tried virtual box i am on linux 10.4 and stupid virtual box will not install windows it gets half way and stops.

A. Try the program PlayOnLinux. if that does not work than I believe you are out of luck. Dont leave Linux though. Because are gaming base with double within the next 3 month. Valve is currently working on steam for linux. This will give us a big library of games.

How do I run Steam games on Linux?
Q. I got Steam to work on Linux using Wine. All my games worked just fine for a while, but all of the sudden none of them will run (except Portal for some reason). When i try to open them it says, "Preparing to launch," then does nothing. Does anyone know what the problem is, or how to fix it?

A. You could use a program like WINE (Windows Emulator) to get it going. Or you can try a virtual machine but sometimes that wont load drivers and you still wont be able to play. The best option will be a dual boot of windows and linux. The reason being, that for the sake of stability, for the drivers to work, and for you to get a good performance it is just easier to play on Windows (since all PC games are generally designed for Windows environments).

Autodesk student software help?

Q. Is there a version of Autodesk Smoke that's for Windows in the Student download center? I saw the one for mac but can't seem to find any other versions.

A. Autodesk Smoke is originally sold on SGI hardware, it was later ported as a turnkey solution on Linux and Mac OS X.

compare - linux, microsft, apple?
Q. essay.
Need good point about MS, apple, + linux
bad points abour: Ms (I know there are millions) , apple +linux

A. MS pros:. Preinstalled. lots of software. good support for most new hardware.
MS Cons: expensive, buggy, prone to worms/viruses/trojans/spyware ..etc, poor support of older hardware, very processor intensive, limited customizing capability, requires continual tweaking.

Linux pros: Stable, secure from most malware, tons of free software (often included), works with most PC hardware, including non intel and older intel processors, can runs some Dos and Windows software

Linux cons: Confusing to new users, must be installed, requires know-how to configure some hardware. cutting-edge hardware may not be supported. Popular commercial software such as games may not be readily available.

Apple pros: Excellent Turnkey system. Excellent stability. fairly low incidence of malware. Simple user interface.
Apple Cons: Somewhat pricey, poor backward compatibility between OS versions.

The focus of the Apple macintosh line has been to bring a computer to the masses as an appliance. So the user can work on their documents without haveing to fiddle with the configuration constantly.

Windows is positioned by MS corp to maintain a strong-arm monopolistic position on the computer software industry as a means of maximizing the value of it's stock.

Linux is the core of a concerted grass-roots approach (Open Source Initiative) that uses an ultra-democratic, ultra-competitive approach to produce software to compete against anti-competitive monopolies and their attempts to subvert everthing for profit legal or otherwise.

Whats are some differences between a laptop and a tablet?

Q. I know that a tablet is touch screen when you swivel it over, but are there any other differences? I want to know because the price difference is a lot.

A. The biggest differences between a laptop and tablet systems is that usually laptops have better speed CPU's and larger Hard drives. Now some tablet system run Window based software and others don't and you can even get a laptop with Linux.

I believe that Laptops are better designed then tablets in terms of handling you dropping them plus the usage. Because tablets for the most part touch and tap controlled you will see damage to the screen area much faster then a laptop. I think you have more flexibility with laptops as well since you add accessories much easier and software which some tablets won't run well you can use them for more things where tablets are designed more for kind of reading.

If you want to rotate your screen just buy a monitor that will allow that option which some laptops have on them.

That's some of the reason I like, hope that helps you out.

How do i use a kindle fire as a computer tablet?
Q. AI have a kindle fire 2. I am in drawing and stuff, but i really need a tablet. SO i asked one of my friends if a kindle fire can be used for a computer tablet. she said yes. I can't find anywhere with that kind of information. I need help.

A. A kindle fire uses type of linux like an android operating system. You can buy applications from Amazon and they run just like apps on a tablet. Just look for them on the kindle store.

What are some cheap graphics tablets for drawing on a computer?
Q. I want reliability and cost -$50. I'm inexperienced with digital art so if you could also share what problems may arise please inform me. I use Mac and Linux, not Windows.

A. There are very few for $50 unless you find something on eBay or get one that is used and very small size. This one is around $53: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823166106&cm_re=graphic_tablet-_-23-166-106-_-Product

What Ubuntu linux friendly scanner do I need?

Q. I am pondering and searching for a scanner which will be beneficial for hand drawn animation.

I need it to... :

be compatible with linux

be quick

great for scanning a lot of drawings

NOT distort or alter the quality of my drawings as I want to put the drawings into finished animation.

I am basically looking for a scanner which will work for my operating system; Ubuntu Linux, and give me the professional quality which you see with television aired 2d animation shows.

A. Well, I'm not exactly the expert on scanners, but what I've been using is an all-in-one HP Photosmart. I know the scanner is probably pretty junky, although good for my purposes, but the way it works for me is an SD card thing. Ubuntu (linux) can't directly scan like Windows does (or I haven't tried), but it recognizes the SD card by USB. So I suggest getting a scanner that has a usb card.

Anyway, the printer/copier/scanner I use is a HP Photosmart C4680, in case you are interested in it. I use HPLIP to print with Linux.

How do I install Ubuntu Linux to my PC when I have two Hard Drives and don't need to partition?
Q. I've been looking at the Ubuntu Linux site for a while, they tell you how to partition a drive, but not how to set it up for two HD's with a choice of which to boot on startup.

I know I could have the BIOS always pop up on powerup, but is there an easier way?

A. It still need to partition the drive used for Ubuntu.
Actually if you have something on the other drive like Windows, the Ubuntu will put it in the Grub boot Menu. I have XP on one drive and Ubuntu on the other on one of my computers. One word of advise, Windows doesn't play well with others, it will overwrite Grub on other drive without a second thought. So if you reinstall/install Windows unplug the Ubuntu drive during install. If your starting out from scratch install Windows first then Ubuntu, it will save the step of editing /etc/grub/menu.lst to add Windows boot item.

How can I recover deleted pictures and videos from Ubuntu/Linux if I update my computer to Windows 7?
Q. I had Ubuntu/Linux program and change from Ubuntu to Windows, but i didn't save the files, and i want to recover the videos and pictures i had in Linux, how can i recover those files if now i have Windows (i still have the same computer)??????

A. Try PhotoRec of the eight listed freeware solutions in the following link (PhotoRec works in Ubuntu, Windows, Mac, ot just about any other OS):
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/recovering-those-accidentally-lost.html

And PhotoRec is NOT a trojan. Either use the above page to find it, or just google the name PhotoRec to find much more info, and reviews, on it.

How can I fully format a pen drive stick?

Q. I downloaded a software called USB secure , this mainly consists in protecting my usb with a password .It requires to be installed on the usb so the program is on the pen drive . I deleted the software from the pc (regular delete from control panel) and formatted my pen drive , it still tells me that I cannot excess it .
Someone with the same experience or that knows the solution please help . Thanks in advance .

A. I am not sure that it will help or not,but try in any linux OS.First try to delete,if that won't possible, then go for formatting.
You can format the pen drive by using DOS also.

1.Open the DOS prompt (Start >> Run >> cmd)
2.Type:FORMAT X: /FS:FAT32 /Q /V:PenDrive

This will reformat the Pen drive, using the FAT32 file system, and label the drive PenDrive.
3. Replace X: with the actual drive letter of your Pen Drive.
4.For more help on this command, type:
FORMAT /?
at the command prompt.

How to keep my pen drive that I use in Ubuntu safe from Windows viruses?
Q. I use Ubuntu on my computer, but none of my friends do. How do I make sure my pen drive doesn't catch a virus on a Windows PC and transmit it to another Windows PC? Is there any way I can see, on my Ubuntu, if the pen drive has Windows viruses in it?

A. Windows viruses won't recognize the Linux programs, or how to attach to them. Even if they did, Linux would not run the virus, as it will not simply run that Windows code...
With ClamAV, you may be able to scan the pen drive.

Problem with ubuntu Linux usb pen drive installation?
Q. Here is my problem:
I installed ubuntu linux on my laptop using someone's pen drive. But before giving back the pen drive to the person, I copied all the files in the pen drive to one of my hard disks, thinking that if ever I need to reinstall linux I will copy these files to my pen drive and that will install linux once again on my system. But that hasn't happened. My pen drive doesn't boot. What's wrong?

A. You need more than just the files. You need to install a bootloader on the disc. Simply dragging the files to and fro is not enough to make it bootable.

i need help for installing puppy Linux in my computer?

Q. I have downloaded puppy Linux iso file and then I have made my USB bootable with it. I stuck it in usb port I booted it and It says searching for puppy files in computer drive and then error comes.

A. Something must have happened when you created your USB bootable. Create it again following instructions from these links

http://www.puppylinux.com/flash-puppy.htm
http://www.linuxgoodies.com/puppyonusb.html

Make sure you do a frugal install and not a full install. The frugal install is a better option.

How to install applications in puppy linux?
Q. Hi, please help me. I am really stuck with this. I just set up puppy linux OS I want to install some software. But whenever I click on the setup file of a software, it says something like that I don't have a run action set. Now how can I install a software in puppy linux? Thanks.

A. You have to use the puppy linux way of installing apps, not the windows way (which is look for apps on the net and download and use the windows installer).

Can I download Puppy Linux with my current computer specs?
Q. I want to stop using Windows ME and switch to Puppy Linux. But I don't know if it would work on my old PC. I have a 6.2 gig hard drive and 128.0 MB of Ram would Puppy Linux work?

A. The 6.2GB hard drive and the 128MB RAM wouldn't give you any problems. But all you have to do is download Puppy Linux and, burn it to disk, and boot the Live CD to see if it works.

You can also install Damn Small Linux if that doesn't work for some reason. I installed DSL on a system with a 4GB hard drive and only 64MB of RAM. It is very very fast and snappy on that system. When first booted, it only takes up 20MB of memory space.

Even DSL Linux would be a big step above Windows ME.

When buying new hardware for a linux system, should I only pick hardware that has linux drivers?

Q. I am new to linux. I want to construct a new computer that will operate linux. Should I only choose hardware (like a TV tuner card or a sound card) for which there are already linux drivers or are there always workarounds for getting every piece of hardware working on linux even if there are no drivers? Are these workarounds easy to implement or will I spend a lot of time and effort trying to get the hardware to work?

A. Naturally the easier path is to buy/use components that have linux drivers readily available. If the component maker doesn't provide the driver a linux supporter will try to reverse engineer the driver. These drivers are not always available until a good period of time after the component is released, and the quality of these drivers vary a lot. Early versions of these drivers do not generally lead to a stable system.
THe people who like to use components that don't have linux drives are those who want to learn the inner workings of linux and even want to learn how to write the drivers.
There are workarounds when you do not have a linux driver but they vary in their success and stability.
If you want a stable system that is easy to setup and maintain and update you best bet is to use as many components as possible that have good linux drivers.
If you google for a component plus linux drivers you should get a good idea of whether linux drivers are available. e.g. Creative audigy 2 z +linux drivers.
More and more manufacturers are coming on board and providing linux drivers. Many linux users complain to the manufacturers if they do not provide linux drives.
Here are some links that list components and linux drivers.
Good luck

How do I limit the bandwidth to each user on the wireless router?
Q. I have a linksys wireless router. Some of the users are abusing the bandwidth
making it difficult for others to surf the internet. Is there any way to set
limits to each user so that nobody ends up using too much of the internet?
How do you adjust the QOS?
I use router WRT54G.
I am the access point, not wireless router.

A. Well, the other answer is partly right; you can't really do it with what you have. However, it is possible to throttle bandwidth for a wireless connection with the right hardware; instead of trying to limit the physical medium by use of a switch, however, you can throttle how much data is allowed to flow to the IP address of each computer using the wireless router. That is to say, everyone still connects wirelessly to an access point, that access point either has built in hardware or attaches to another device that limits how much bandwidth each IP gets. (You can even go cheap and build a Linux router out of an old PC for this.) Theoretically, there is no limit between the access point and the PC, but if only 5Mb/sec comes to the access point to deliver to the PC, it effectively limits the connection.

What is the best Linux distribution for a beginner?
Q. I don't know anything about Linux. Should be easy to use and should be an active and popular distribution that is still updated from time to time and has an active developer team.

A. Here are some options for installing or trying out Linux

Option One (Full installation)

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 10.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint 9 Download
http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=52

http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-linux-mint-9-isadora

Linux Mint 9 User Guide Download pdf.
http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_isadora.php

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 9 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

Also worth considering :

Fedora Remix (Fedora with elements of Linux Mint)
http://fcoremix.wordpress.com/2010/05/25/lucky-13/
http://iso.linux.hr/community-fedora-remix/
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/13/html/User_Guide/

Again Fedora Remix can be run direct from the LiveDVD without touching your Hard Drive

Option Two (Install Linux inside Windows)

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

Ubuntu 10.04 Download
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) User Guide
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Lucid

Linux Mint 9 which is built upon Ubuntu 10.04 has a similar feature called mint4win and the directions given above for Wubi can be followed
http://duncsweb.com/2009/09/27/mint4win-a-wubi-based-installer-of-linux-mint/

As with Linux Mint 9 and Fedora Remix, Ubuntu 10.04 can also be run straight from the LiveCD without touching your Hard drive

Option Three (LiveCD)

Here the possibilities are endless as you can try out as many different Linux distros. as you like until you find the one thats right for you DISTROWATCH.COM gives full listings (second lists the major distributions)

How do you install drivers for your hardware on Linux?

Q. I have Gentoo and I love it except I can't connect to the internet. I have a Dell laptop 100L Latitude (hey! It was practically free). I am feeling rather slow so a really good website would be really helpful (Like "Installing drivers on Gentoo for Dummies" sort of thing) Or if it isn't as hard as it feels like right now and you can just explain it- that would be good too. :-D

A. It might be in your best interest to an easier distro to start off with gentoo is great but not for beginners.
as far as the net not working could be a network connection not set I have had this a few times on some distros. Any ubuntu based distro is a much better choice for a newbie I hope your time with linux is good but it might be less then you hope for with gentoo this early in the game.

What book to use to learn Programming language?
Q. What books can i use to learn c c++ and assembly. I dont want to spend more then £35 for all 3. Should i use dummies or other books?

A. Hi,

Luckly for you, some great books are already available for free (legally, I mean).

* The Art of Assembly Language by Randall Hyde. This is universally considered the best book on x86 assembly. This book comes in two editions. The first one comes in three flavours: 16-bit DOS, 32-bit Windows and 32-bit Linux, while the second comes in a hybrid Windows/Linux version. You may find this a bit odd, but I recommend that you read the DOS edition because (a) the other versions focus on HLA, the author's assembler which is not mainstream---for good reason, and (b) DOS has a very simple API and you will thus be able to focus on the actual assembly without distractions (don't worry, this version of the book still covers 32-bit registers, instructions, and addressing modes and even a few privileged things that cannot be used under Windows/Linux). Once you're ready, switching to another OS will be a breeze.

You'll also need JWasm, a free MASM clone (i.e., the assembler for which the book was written) and DOSBox (an MS-DOS emulator) so that you can test the programs while you write them.

Book: http://homepage.mac.com/randyhyde/webster.cs.ucr.edu/www.artofasm.com/DOS/index.html
Lab manual (optional): http://homepage.mac.com/randyhyde/webster.cs.ucr.edu/www.artofasm.com/DOS/pdflab.zip
stdlib (library used in the book): http://webster.cs.ucr.edu/AsmTools/MASM/stdlib/stdlib.zip
JWasm for DOS: http://www.japheth.de/Download/JWasm/JWasm206bd.zip
JWasm for Windows (later): http://www.japheth.de/Download/JWasm/JWasm206b.zip
DOSBox: http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1

* Thinking in C++, 2nd ed. by Bruce Eckel --- This is a _very_ popular C++ book and its author is on the ISO C++ standards committee so you can trust that he is a guru.

Volume 1: http://www.mindviewinc.com/downloads/TICPP-2nd-ed-Vol-one.zip
Volume 2: http://www.mindviewinc.com/downloads/TICPP-2nd-ed-Vol-two.zip

* The C Programming Language, 2nd ed. by Brian W. Kernighan and Dennis M. Ritchie --- A.k.a. K&R, this is still considered to be the best way of learning C despite being written many years ago. One of the authors is actually the creator of C, while the other is one of the guys who developed UNIX. You'll need to buy this one, I'm afraid.

Which is the best book for Database programming with Java?
Q. Please suggest a good book for database programming with Java . I have just done some elementary Java learning with "Java for Dummies" by Barry Burd, but I could not access the database programming with Java there.I also plan to refer to Head Start with Java now .Please suggest how should I proceed from here to be a good Java EE developer.

A. That is a hard question. It is a hard question because we have brand new standards and we are trying new techniques. As a base I would install NetBeans with the JavaEE. I mean really, there is a lot going on with DB. Also install MySQL for your database. It would be better if you were Linux.

Then, there is a trend towards the JPA -- Java Persistence API / Hibernate. What that does is let you write business logic that is independent of the underlying database. With Java there are many technologies for the server-side. You need to start thinking about database structure.

Apress 'Pro JPA. Mastering Peristence Technology'. Which will be part of Java7.

The best starter book for Hibernate is (perhaps) Hibernate Made Easy".

JavaEE is a big, big subject. I think my suggestions will point you in the right direction.
