How does Linux hosting without CPanel look like?

Q. Im new to VPS hosting. I need a linux hosting with php and mysql.

I will not be including CPanel in my hosting. Can I manage or do I have to struggle ?
Can anyone give me a link on how VPS hosting will look like for Linux /

A. Technically speaking, it won't "look" like anything. If the host doesn't provide an alternative web interface to configure it, you will probably have to connect to it using an SSH client. If you do this, you will have a screen similar to the following (depending on the SSH client):

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LuO-4280xLs/TjZpXwahwSI/AAAAAAAAAFY/l6Tei3RvlYQ/s1600/sshd+copy.png

Can I modify a wep page thats on linux hosting using FrontPage?
Q. I´m trying to modify a web page usig FronPage and every time I want to publish the new page I get the message ´´server error.cannot change permissions´´.Anybody knows if this is because the page is on a linux hosting server???

A. yes,

It has been a while since I used frontpage, but when you "open" the site, or create a new website, there should be an option for "FTP" this will allow you to download/upload to your website regardless of windows, linux, mac etc. Your ftp details will have been given by your hosting service when you registered with them.

I hope this helps

I have a windows operating system, I want to start a website.. Can i use a linux host on my OS? I'm sure i can
Q. Well, Planing on opening a video site. For people to upload videos..
And i was checking the host out . Linux hosting. I can use that on a MS machine correct?

A. You def can but I'm not sure if you can test a linux based website on a Windows based computer, locally... This may make it a bit hard to design ???

Could i use linux for light gaming on old computers?

Q. I like to browse the net and also play such games as DDO and LOTRO. I have really old crappy computers, so i think a lighter os would help. They use mainly XP, but some vista, and maybe a 7, but all windows. Some of them can run the games, and there are ways of playing them on linux (wine), so i see no problem with switching, and i am at least mildly compitent with computers. Any thought to convince/deter me, or any ideas on a specific os (ubuntu, mint...)

A. Yes, but it won't improve performance. Unless the game uses and openGL renderer, expect 1/3-1/2 FPS's under WINE.

There is out there a thing called Tiny XP which is XP minus everything you don't need for most games. Illegal if you just download the .iso and install it, but legal if you use your CD, rip it, modify it with special tools, burn it, and install with your own windows key. Something like that or just a fresh install would give you performance as good as your going to get for windows games.

How to install msn instant messenger onto ubuntu?
Q. I just recently got ubuntu and i am having problems installing and downloading files, Does anyone have any clue how to download MSN messenger on ubuntu? When i try the regular way it says i dont have the right stuff to do it, i have hear about doing it using linux wine. but i dont know how to do that, helP!!!!

A. Hey there!

The problem is, Windows Live Messenger doesn't work proporly in Wine yet, So you have two options.

1) Use Pidgin, It's MSN and it comes with Ubuntu! To get to it go to Applications, Internet, Pidgin Instant Messenger and follow the instructions

2) You can get aMSN, It's more MSN Like and supports Webcam. You can install it by Clicking Applications, Accessories, Terminal and copying and pasting the following in:

gksu apt-get install amsn

Then pressing enter. When you are back at the command line (After all the text has finished flashing up), Close your terminal and go to Applications, Internet, aMSN.

Hope I helped! Ubuntu 4eva!

How long does it take to learn how to program using the Linux operating system?

Q. Im trying to learn how to use linux but I dont know how to program where do I start?

A. You start by consulting basic Linux references on how to properly maintain a Linux system. You then learn how to use the Linux command line. Then you learn how to properly install software that allows you to program. Then you learn how to program in whatever language you want to learn; you should learn C if you're dealing with Linux since that's what Linux understands the most: raw power.

What is the best linux distribution for learning to use many?
Q. First, a bit about my background.. I currently work as a Network Engineer, mainly with Cisco routers/switches and VPN devices. I am throughly familiar with Windows, both as a workstation and server, and have one more test to go to complete my MCSE. However, I have no real experience with Linux, and feel like this is both a hole in my personal knowledge and in my resume. :) I can do basic user stuff both from a command line and in Xwindows, but have no real command of it.

That said, I intend to rectify this. I want to start using Linux as my primary operating system on my personal PC, as I feel this is a great first step to really force myself to learn it. I need to know what distribution would be best for me to use. My concern is some of them seem to have alot of propriatary tools that are not found in other linux distros, I want to find one to learn on that will best allow me to be comfortable on any linux distro I run into in the future. Thanks much for your advice!

A. Linux truly is a wonderful operating system! If I'm using a PC, I greatly prefer using it to Windows. It's much more stable, secure, etc. But you already knew that. =]

Personally, I would suggest you start out with OpenSuSE. It's easy to use, yet it is very powerful. Its installer is also pretty easy. I recommend that because a lot of businesses that run Linux on their client systems use SuSE (the only difference between that and OpenSuSE is that SuSE contains closed-source programs; therefore, you have to pay for that distro).

I hope this helps! Good luck!

How much Linux do I know to qualify for some of these jobs out there?
Q. I'm an MCSE/MCITP have my bachelors, and 8 years experience but never touched Linux. I noticed a lot of jobs require some Linux. Obviously I'll never be a guru as I don't use it on the job and never have, but what's a good place to start and how much of it do I need to know to get around comfortably?

A. Get a hold of a few old computers, set up a LAN, and learn how to do anything you can think of. Start learning basic shell commands and how to look up such commands, "man" looks up the manual (docs) for each command, "apropos" searches man pages for a word to find a related command, etc.

If you have a network printer figure out how to use that. Set up apache webserver. Play around with bind9 configuring DNS zones for your LAN. Learn how "samba" interacts with Windows file and printer sharing and WINS. Set up a couple of mail servers using sendmail or postfix and learn how to successfully send mail between them.

And when you get comfortable enough with it, set up a Linux computer as your internet router, masquerading your private LAN from the internet, port forwarding, and other firewall rules (basically learning "iptables").

I am 1700 miles from our factory, so I am not sure what all they use Linux for. But it has been used as a safe public smtp interface for our mail, forwarded into/out of our internal Exchange server. They use Smoothwall Linux for "squid" web proxy (I use IPCop on an old K6-2/400 cpu for squid). Our document retrieval system for literature and drawings is apache webserver in Linux with search pages/scripts written by our network guru.

how do i install itunes 10 on linux ubuntu?

Q. I've used wine and play on linux to download the application, but it just isn't working. Every time I click on the application to open it doesn't open up. Does anyone know what I can do to make it work.
itunes seven is working just fine, but I don't want the old version i want the newer version.

A. I love it when people respond to questions, and have no idea what there talking about.

First make sure you have an up to date copy of WINE and POL, I know the POL in the Ubuntu repos is the older version (at least last time I checked) Same goes for WINE. Make sure your running if from either the WINE menu, or from POL directly. If you just double click the EXE it will run without the switches, and may not work at all. If your doing all of this I'd suggest a complete PURGE not removal of WINE and POL. Don't use Software center, use apt-get. Software center will only remove them

#sudo apt-get purge wine
#sudo apt-get purge playonlinux
#sudo apt-get autoremove
#sudo apt-get autoclean

Make sure there's no hidden folders in your home folder (with a . in front of them) referencing WINE or POL. Alt+H will show them

Download POL from them directly, don't install from the Ubuntu repos. (Current Ver is 3.8.12)
http://www.playonlinux.com

POL Is dependent on WINE, so it will be installed automatically, so will the MS fonts. It should work fine after that.

Banshee has come a long way, not really a need to run iTunes in Linux anymore. I just installed it to see what would happen and it appeared to run fine, imported my music library and played them fine, connected to my ipod etc. You results should be the same. I still like Native software when possible.

How do i find out how much memory my graphic card has ubuntu?
Q. ok im using play on linux and when i am installing steam it asked how much memory my graphic card has and i dont know how to find out help?

A. if it's discrete you should be able to look up the model number to find out.

For integrated, you need to dig in the bios and see how much RAM was set aside for video buffers.

Is it possible to run Ubuntu Linux from an external Hard Drive?
Q. I've been wanting to play around with Linux and learn how to use it. Is it possible to run / boot it from my external USB hard drive? Is this possible to do safely but still use the hard drive for storage when I'm using Vista?

A. Yes, you can run other OSs from removable media. I have heard of some people running Windows XP from a Compact Flash card. You would need to plug the device in, then reboot. You should see your normal BIOS load screen. Press the Setup function key, then select Boot> Boot device. Select USB External HardDrive or whatever, then reboot again.

How can I install Linux Mint 7 on a net book?
Q. Please help! I am not happy with Windows XP and want to switch over to Linux Mint 7. The problem is, that I have a net book and do not know how to install Linux without a CD-Drive. Can I install it using a pen drive/ external hard drive? Please give me a detailed informatory paragraph with the exact steps.

A. Here is a link to how to install linux mint without a cd drive. You could run mint from the usb or do what they call a frugal install.
Did you check to see if the specs for the netbook are adequate for linux mint, or any other full linux distro?
You may need to use a linux distro that is customized for the netbook. Here ar some links that discuss various distros for the netbook
Good luck

How can I keep my programming lab away from viruses?
Q. I maintain a undergraduate basic computer programming lab.

There are thirty windows PCs. No Internet connections.

Students are allowed to use USB pen drives. So spreading of virus is a common problem. But since Internet is not available, anti-virus software are not used because of the unavailability of frequent update.

Linux is not an option. This is because, we need to run windows-based software.

So what can I do to prevent the spreading of viruses?

A. Disable autorun for USB.

Microsoft also makes a product where all the computers boot from a stable known image on every reboot.

You can also put update detection for many anti-virus programs on a disk and update from that.

How can I install Linux fedora 4 on a computer with out using Virtual PC?

Q. I want to install linux fedora 4 on my computer to make it a server. But i want to do it so that it will run of the harddrive becaause i have a spare 250 gb that i want to use. So how can i put it on the computer itself instead of Virtual PC

A. You could repartition your hard disk, overwrite whatever existing system you have, or install a second hard disk.

Which ever you choose - get a more up to date version then Fedora 4, which is ancient. Go for Fedora 9 instead.

How to preserve "My Documents" while migrating from XP to Linux (Fedora)?
Q. Hi,

I want to get rid of Microsoft XP and install Fedora on my PC.
Is it possible to install LInux (Fedora) on my PC, preserve the contents of My Documents, and not make a backup somewhere out of the hard disk, where I am making the installation?

A. Hi, if you want to backup the files without using another harddrive then I would suggest partitioning your Harddrive before you install Linux.

Go to Start>Run and type "diskmgmt.msc" in the run command. Press Ok and a new window should open. In Disk Management right click the drive you want to partition (usually the C: drive), select "Shrink Volume..." and then enter the amount of space you want to partition in the new window. Make sure it is enough space to copy all your files to. Select "Ok" and a new partition will be created.

Then copy all your files to the new partition, install Linux over the partition where XP is installed, then move all your files from the new partition onto the partition where you replaced XP with Linux, and once all the files are moved back into Linux you can use "parted" or whatever disk partitioning software Linux has to delete the new partition.

As you can see this might be easier if you buy an external drive instead.

How do I transfer files to and from my computer I'm remotely connected to through SSH?

Q. I want to be able to transfer files to and from my home computer remotely while accessing it from an SSH connection...How do I do this? Do I need to set up an FTP server on my home computer? It's running Debian Linux and I access it from my Android phone using ConnectBot.

A. If it's running an ssh server that will include scp and usually sftp.
You can connect with any scp/sftp client like winscp, rsync. If you set up SSH keys access you need not bother with passwords (though it's still a good idea to have some passphrase in case you lose the phone)

ftp is less secure, unless you use SSL

I am accessing my home linux box remotely from work. How can I copy files from that linux comp to my local com
Q. I am accessing my home linux computer remotely from my MacBook via SSH. I am behind a NAT, so I don't have a static IP. I want to retrieve some files from that linux box to my MacBook. Is there a reverse SCP command that I can use so that I can SCP the file from my home linux box to my MacBook at work through the already established tunnel?

A. You use scp direct (not through the tunnel). It can copy either way. One option is to log in to your Linux box through ssh, then use scp to the Mac from there. you would need the address of the mac, and forwarding set up at its' router. Alternatively use the scp from the mac console to your Linux machine. You must have its' address if you can ssh to it.

Is there a way to easily shutdown a remote linux server with a shell script?
Q. I have 3 linux servers hooked to my UPS. I can only hook the UPS to one of them. The UPS software will allow me to run a shell script on that one server before it shuts down. And I want that shell script to shut down the other 2 servers. Is this possible?
@ Roland J: I AM FULLY AWARE OF HOW TO SHUTDOWN A LINUX MACHINE.

@ Roland J: Please donât answer a question unless you actually READ the question!!!!! It makes other people think the question is answered, when in reality, your just lazy to even read the full title of the question. (or you donât know what the word âremoteâ means)

I need to know how to shutdown a linux machine REMOTELY.

This means that I want to run a script on LinuxBox1 and have LinuxBox2 (another linux server on same LAN) shut down.

A. Actually SSH would have to be set up first to allow passwordless, login between servers.

I found the solution else where, and just wanted to post it here, in case anyone else stubles on this question looking for an answer.

NOTE: IN THE RESOLUTION BELOW MANY OF THE COMMANDS ARE CUT OFF, OR INCORECTULY SHOW AS TWO LINES. FOLLOW THIS LINK FOR A PROPERLY FORMATED ANSWER.
http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?p=863427#post863427

RESOLUTION:
Here's what I did...

First I ssh'd from each machine to each other one. (The first time u ssh to new machine it asked you to accept the machines "fingerprint" and saves it -- this is just so they know who each other are.

Then on the machine I wanted to be able to shutdown FROM I did
cd /root/.ssh/
ssh-keygen -t rsa
and accepted the default location. (/root/.ssh/id_rsa)
I left the passphrase blank, so it would not be required.

Then basically you just need to copy that "id_rsa" file onto the DESTINATION machine, in the same directory, but named as "authorized_keys". Which can easily be done like this:
scp id_rsa.pub xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:/root/.ssh/authorized_keys
Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address or host name of remote machine.
NOTE: You may want to check if a file by that name already exists, on the remote machine, because the above command will overwrite it without warning. -- If you already have a file by that name on the remote machine, I would suggest using command above, but change the file name. Then on the remote machine, append the file you just copied to the existing one. This could easily be done like this: (there may be an even simpler way - but this is what I know)
mv /root/.ssh/authorized_keys /root/.ssh/authorized_keys.backup
cat /root/.ssh/authorized_keys.backup /root/.ssh/yourfilename > /root/.ssh/authorized_keys

Then make sure the /root/.ssh/authorized_keys file has 600 permissions.
chmod 600 /root/.ssh/authorized_ keys
Then try to ssh to the remote machine.
ssh xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
And if it works like it did for me -- it will let you right in, with no username or password. If this works correctly, you should be able to remotely run commands through ssh within scripts.

Q. I would like one of the free linux operating systems for my old computer but i have a really slow connection so i can't download it without it taking a few days. Is there anyway i can order it somewhere and it still be free? Thanks.

How do i install linux operating system on my laptop?
Q. Can someone talk me through the process to download and install linux operating system, i know that i would like to switch to that operating system, but i dont know which package i should get, or what type of installation to download and how to install???

thanks for the help.

A. Download the Linux installer CD or DVD image file. Next, burn the image to a disc - this is not the same thing as just copying it onto a disc. If you have Windows Vista or 7 then right click the file and choose 'open with Windows disc image burner' from the menu. With Windows 8 choose 'burn image to disc' from the menu. If you have XP then you'll need to use software such as Isoburn to create the disc: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Next, boot the laptop from the CD or DVD and then follow the instructions that it presents you with. If you're unfamiliar with Linux you should probably use Ubuntu as it's the easiest to use.

If you're uncomfortable with this procedure then Ubuntu have a utility to automatically download and install it alongside Windows, you can do this from within Windows by following this link: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer . This method also provides an easy way to remove it again.

How to create a use on Linux, allow them to login with a certain password and make them a memeber of a group?

Q. I need to create multiple users, allow them to login with a certain passwork say "fire" and then make them members of a group? How would I do that.

A. need more info. what is the distro your using? it matters. if your using a modern full featured distro like ubuntu then you can do it through System -> Admin -> Users and Groups. If you are using a non full featured linux distro like crunchbang then you need to do it through the terminal. terminal would be "sudo adduser" without the "". you will have to add arguments to that command. for full help with that type "adduser --help" it will tell you everything you need to know. the terminal option will be available on all linux distros.

Is there a way to download the mediawiki software and run it on locally for testing purposes?
Q. I'd like to start a wiki, and I've heard that the software is free, but I don't have anywhere to host it now. Is there a way I could set it up just to run locally and not available to the outside internet? (and add pages, edit pages, create user accounts, pretty much fully use it in every way, except locally). Thanks!

A. No problem. I have it running at home on a Linux box with Apache.

You'll need to start by installing a web server. Apache is free, and if you have Windows you can try IIS. There are plenty of tutorials on installing Mediawiki on both.

I need a good practical source from which I can learn how to use red hat Linux any suggestions ?
Q. I do not need a cluttered source, I already tried official guides but those are too long and boring (Same thing with a " a practical guide to fedora and RHEL). I am just looking for a short hand book that teaches the basics of red hat enterprise Linux (create file, search files, move files, list processes, file permissions ....). Please help

A. At this level you can probably work with any book that covers Unix/Linux basics. Red Hat specifics are probably not so relevant initially. (Certainly you should be able to mix and match Fedora, CentOS, and RedHat.)

I've used books from the "Dummy's Guide" series before, and although I've not looked at the Linux one specifically it might be worth seeing if you can borrow it from your local library.

There's an interesting looking YouTube series, too.

Finally, depending on where and in which country you live, there may be a Linux Users Group nearby. Some of them are a bit geeky (possibly too geeky) but you should find people there who are happy to spend some time with you, maybe over a beer, helping you learn.

Best Linux for an older computer with not so great specs?

Q. I have an old machine kicking around and I want to get linux running on it. It runs windows XP right now but it has very little RAM. I am not very technical at all so any help would be greatly appreciated :)

A. DSL, Puppy or Tiny Core will run on almost any hardware, but, as they are all quickly downloadable, try them all & see which you like best. And don't dismiss any of the "mainframe" sized distros, as they can run well on limited hardware, as has been said.

My old laptop is about to crash and burn need to get new one?
Q. Does anyone out there know what is the VERY BEST of the new small laptop's. I only have this ACER one 2 and a half years and found it very reliable - well up till now.
Have been told that the ASUS Eee PC 1000 is good - is it or is there a better one in the same price range

A. The Acer Aspire One is a really great netbook. Netbooks are basically all the same; dual core Intel Atom processor at 1.6GHz, about 1GB of RAM, Linux or XP operating system, tiny screen, tiny keyboard, and different hard drive ranges.
The Acer Aspire One is a great netbook because you get to customize it to fit your needs. They range from 8.9 inch to 10.1 inch for the screen. The Intel Atom is one of the best netbook processors. You can pick from 512MB to 1GB of RAM. You can choose either the Linux or the Microsoft operating system. And you can choose a SSD or a magnetic hard drive.
My experiences with the Acer Aspire One were great.

Which Linux Distro Should I Use?
Q. I am trying to find the right distro for my old crappy computer:
Intel Celeron M 1.8ghz
512mb RAM
Intel GMA 950

I am looking at these distros right now:
DSL
Tiny-Core
Puppy Linux
Fluxbuntu
WattOS

Do not recommend:
Ubuntu, or Xubuntu, or Ubuntu light.

Preferences: GUI, Somewhat easy to use, Requires 128mb RAM or less to run.

A. With a 1.8ghz CPU and 512mb RAM your options are more open than you might think

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LXDE (similar in style to GNOME but lighter) which is ideally suited to older hardware and built upon Ubuntu 10.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint 9 LXDE Download
http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=60

Linux Mint 9 LXDE User Guide pdf.
http://linuxmint.com/rel_isadora_lxde.php

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 LXDE then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 9 LXDE can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

Option One (Full installation)

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

http://www.scribd.com/doc/23787138/Linux-Mint-8-Helena-User-Guide

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

Option Two (Install Linux inside Windows)

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

Ubuntu 9.10 and Linux Mint 7 can also be run straight from the LiveCD without touching your Hard drive

At present I do not recommend Ubuntu 10.04/Linux Mint 9 owing to multiple stability issues

Option Three (LiveCD)

Here the possibilities are endless as you can try out as many different Linux distros. until you find the one thats right for you DISTROWATCH.COM gives full listings (second lists the major distributions)

where to download red hat Linux Enterprise?
Q. is red hat enterprice is free? where to download it? for learning purpose?

A. You should go to :
http://distrowatch.com/search.php
and use the search engine to filter which distro would be best for you. You can select a version for beginners, or multimedia, or a special purpose. They are all free to download. You can read reviews and articles about each distro. You can select a distro for ease of use, needs little ram or hard drive space, popularity, most software packages available, amount of customization, etc.

I would also suggest that you go to that distros website to read their documentation, especially if you are new to linux. They have tutorials on how to install, how to setup various hardware, and tips and tricks. I would also recommend using their forum to search/ask for info/help.

What's the difference between Linux operating systems?
Q. Linux has a lot of operating systems, I'm not even going to bother to list them. I was wondering, it there a difference between them? Does each type of Linux operating system hold a specific purpose? For example, Red Hat holds a different functionality to Ubuntu, or something like that.

A. Linux has many distros but all versions of Linux are the same OS.

Linux is extremely customizable. So much so that it'd be impossible for one person to do all the tweaks necessary to have what most people consider a polished and functional operating system. On top of that many Linux distros are heavily customized for specific purposes. Robotics, hardware appliance (routers for example), Real time OS (traffic lights, microwave ovens, unmanned aircraft), Music studios, Network security, Home theatre, Cash register, various industrial and scientific specialties, generic servers and so on.

There are also distros that are specialized to fit on a 1.44 floppy, thumb drives and a few distros specifically designed to run on CDs rather than be installed on a machine. There are distros that mimic other operating systems such as Mac OS and Windows so closely that at a glance you wouldn't know that you were not using those OS's. Other's are branded such as Dell's version of Ubuntu which is customized for Dell hardware.

There are also commercial versions of Linux. Red Hat Enterprise for example which is designed for high end servers and IBM's SUSE which has customizations for running on IBM virtual servers/being the host OS for the virtual servers, a desktop version which much of Europe's governments uses.

Distros often come with sub distros that are customized for various purposes. For example most major distros have a KDE and a Gnome version These are customized to people's favorite window managers and some distros support up to 5 or 6 window managers with sub-distros. Most support at least 2 or 3. Long term support, special purpose sub-distros like Ubuntu Studio which is geared for musicians are also common with widely used general distros.

The majority of distros however are shortcuts for Linux users to get what they want/need without spending the thousand of hours personally making those customizations. For example some like myself do too much customization and install too much software to upgrade a machine every 2 years. So long term support versions appeal heavily to me. I need and use a large variety of applications so it's important to have very large software repositories. Other people choose high performance bare bone distros. Some people want total control over their sytem and choose primitive distros that give you the bare min necessary, anything else the user installs themselves and customize as they see fit. (not recommended for anybody but an expert).

There are philosophical choices involved in choosing a distro. One big split for example is RH vrs Debian based systems. The RH fork (RHE, SUSE, Mandriva, CentOS) and Debian fork (Ubuntu, Debian) have some small differences in the way they are built. For example RH systems use YUM for software installation while Debian based systems use Apt-Get. You can install and use YUM on Debian systems and Apt-Get on RH systems. It's just a matter of defaults. Same with how root privileges are handled, and other minor details. The average user won't notice such subtle differences.

I've included a link to distro watch which gives details about specific distros as well as release cycles and where to download them.

Do you think a Unix or Linux Administrator can get a job almost anywhere in the world easily?

Q. Let's say a person from America go to Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, or whatever. Do you think it would be easy to get a job since they have Linux Administration experience?

A. if you have the Linux qualifications then yes you will get a job any where in the world,
Linux runs the Internet,
Linux runs 455 of the worlds fastest top 500 HPC (High Powered Computers) Microsoft have 1 HPC in the bottom 45 (their own system)

You use Linux every day and don't know it, Linux run all domestic appliances from TV's Microwaves, Washers, Dryers, In car computers The list of embedded Linux in use is endless

Why is Linux the operating system of choice for so many electronic gadgets?
Q. i need to know why Linux is the operating system of choice for so many electronic gadgets?

A. DavoJo has a good answer, but I'm going to go a little further and mention that embedded developers have the freedom to easily compile in only the features they need, which results is a fast-booting, bloat-free, lean operating system that is still as feature-rich as they desire.

Adding drivers for specialized hardware is easier than with other systems (Greg Kroah-Hartman and his team of volunteers will even write the drivers for you if you just provide specs), so hardware compatibility is a non-issue. With the abundance of Unix and portable C software available, software compatibility is also good.

Finally, Linux is free and easy to license, as long as you don't blatantly violate the GPL. (As of now, Linux is still licensed under version 2 of the GPL, so you still have a good number of options as far as how you use it and what you use it with.)

how can i get embedded linux?
Q. how and what to i need to create an embedded linux solution and what kind of thigns can i do with it?

A. hm well that is not an easy one, u can do a lot with embedded linux, as a matter of fact, nowadays it is included in many devices, but there are different eeproms with linux embedded, it is mostly build upon busybox which is actually just a small bash with minimal programs, but u can build upon it a good place to start looking are the wiki pages

I am new to Ubuntu Linux where should I start?

Q. I installed an old copy of ubuntu linux 6 and I am fairly new to it. I would like to know where to find programs for ubuntu, how to install them, how to troubleshoot some minor problems (such as getting the Internet to work) etc. Is there a good website for this sort of stuff?

A. Ubuntu 6.10 is no longer supported. You can get it up and running with a little extra work but why make it hard for yourself.

Take a look at Linux Mint 5 (Main Edition) its easy to install easy to use and has much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled.

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 5 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint 5 can also be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.

An alternative release of Ubuntu worth looking at is 8.04.2 http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ The installation tutorial I have supplied above also applies to Ubuntu 8.04.2

There is a wealth of help and documentation from the Ubuntu Community and much of it applies to Linux Mint as well https://help.ubuntu.com/community

Coming soon is the AWESOME Ubuntu 9.04 which I am currently testing.

NOTE : Avoid Ubuntu 8.10 as it is utterly dreadful and this will be made abundantly clear upon the release of Ubuntu 9.04

How do I get Ubuntu Linux to detect a windstream modem?
Q. I am hooking up my brothers new computer which has Ubuntu Linux and I need to know how to get it to detect his windstream modem.

which is the best virtual machine software which runs over vista and fully supports linux?

Q. I am planning to install Linux over my Vista using a virtual machine....does anyone know which virtual machine should i use?
Thanks for you reply guys!!! Can you tell me which VMware should i use coz i saw many versions ...Wubi is good but i want to install Ubuntu in virtual machine environment just to try ....if i like it i will actually install in my hard drive.

A. I recommend VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ I have used it to test countless Linux distros.

Alternatively you can run off a LiveCD. You download an ISO of the distro. and create a bootable disc using Nero Burning ROM or similar software.

Once you have done that you can Linux LIVE without touching your Hard Drive and performance would be improved to that of a Virtual installation.

I recommend Linux Mint 4.0 (Daryna) http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_daryna.php which is superior to raw Ubuntu and easy to install and use http://www.howtoforge.com/desktop-installation-guide-linux-mint-4.0-daryna This is an installation guide but it also gives a detailed summary of the contents of Linux Mint and may come in useful should you decide to install it on VirtualBox.

Is it possible to run a real computer, (on an external drive, or another partition) inside a virtual machine?
Q. I am somewhat experienced with computers and used virtual machines on a range of OS's (host and virtual).
I am currently dual-booting Linux(Debian-based) and Windows(vista).

My question really is: Can i use my windows inside a virtual machine on my Linux, or my Linux inside a virtual machine on my Windows?

Any reply is appreciated!

A. If you're experienced with virtual machines and have done it before... why are you asking?

Anyway, go to http://www.vmware.com/ and download the free one. You can also (if this is what you're asking) connect to an already existing hard drive, partition, etc., and boot the OS that way. Works A LOT better with the already-existing Linux hard drive than vice-versa.

It is Linux, Windows, etc., compatible as both a host and a guest OS.

How do I run Linux on a Virtual Machine in Windows XP SP3?
Q. I can't use VMware's VMplayer, because I use VMACE for work and they conflict.

What virtual machine should I use?

And also, which distro if Linux should I start with? I'm not experienced at all.

A. You can try Virtual Box and Ubuntu

Partitioning a hard drive with two different Linux OS's sharing a common file system?

Q. How do I partition my hard drive with two Linux operating systems so that they have a common shared file system? It was explained to me a long time ago but I forgot. THANK YOU in advance for your time and consideration.

A. First, contrary to what jerry said, two /home/ directories may not be safely shared. There are two many config files, you you may end up with name and version conflicts.

/temp may be safely shared

the swap may be safely shared (but wierd thing can happen on resume from hibernate)

also /boot/ may be safely shared so long as you only configure from one system or the other, and there are no filename collisions (unlikely so no really safe in practice)

To just share media file, I would just create a partition and mount it at /share by editing the fstab of both systems. Then you can make your /home/user/Music a soft link that point to /share/Music. Repeat for Documents, Pictures, Downloads, and whatever else you care to share.

What is the best file system to use on an SSD?
Q. We want to install a Linux system on a SSD and were wondering whether there is a preferable file system choice.
Since the drive does wear leveling, I guess the FS doesn't matter *that* much, but still, fewer write accesses are better. Do some FS manage to get fewer total bytes written per pay load bytes?

A. Check out SSD Linux.

What is a good file system to use for windows and linux?
Q. I have windows XP on my HD and I am about to install Ubuntu on the same one. Then I have a second HD that i want my home directory to be for Ubuntu, and Windows files. I want to know what file system to use so that it is completely compatible with both windows and ubuntu. I dont need if for any really big files like anything bigger than 2 GB. Thanks!

A. You may have trouble getting ubuntu to use NTFS file directory as your /home partition. I suggest you make your share partition somewhere else. /media/share or something like that. It wouldn't be particularly wise to use a linux /home partition as a windows share anyway, but if you insist on it you will find that even though linux CAN use NTFS as your /home directory, it will refuse to set one up on install. It will give you an error and tell you to use a linux filesystem.

It is, however, possible to use NTFS by adding the partition in fstab and telling it to mount at /home. You will need to create a copy of your user folder into the partition before you mount it. It may be tricky to export your user folder to the new partition, then delete the old one. You'll need to do this as root, from tty1 (ctrl-alt-F1) and you'll want to make sure your username is logged out (and X probably stopped with "/etc/init.d/gdm stop") before you do it.

If this sounds too tricky, don't try it, just make yourself a share partition and don't mount it at /home because like I said, it's unwise to use your /home partition as a share partition anyway.

But yeah, short answer, use NTFS.

How do I download openSUSE onto a live USB?

Q. How much space does it require to boot? Is there anything that I have to download onto the USB stick to make it ready? And in general, how DO you download something to a live USB? Please give me a step by step guide.

A. This might help you a lot:

How do install mpeg decoders and flash for linux fedora 10?
Q. I am completely new to linux fedora and linux for that matter. I am running fedora from a live usb until i get these issues fixed. I apparently need to install mpeg decoders, xvid decoders, avi decoders and a flash player. Being a complete noob to linux I don't know how to go about this.

A. It looks like the decoders are not patent free and fedora will not include them. Other linux distros do allow a user to install them if they wish at their own risk.
The second link has instructions for flash.
You should search the fedora foum for more info on the codecs.
Good luck

How can I set folder permissions in linux in such a way that users can create files/folders, but not delete?

Q. I have made a folder on my linux server, which needs to function as some sort of "deposit box".

Users should be able to create files & folders, but not delete them after they have been created.
Is that possible from a linux command line?

A. You'd probably have to mess with umask and chmod.
umask [-p] [-S] [mode]
The user file-creation mask is set to mode. If mode begins with a digit, it is interpreted as an octal number; otherwise it is interpreted as a symbolic mode mask similar to that accepted by chmod(1). If mode is omitted, the current value of the mask is printed. The -S option causes the mask to be printed in symbolic form; the default output is an octal number. If the -p option is supplied, and mode is omitted, the output is in a form that may be reused as input. The return status is 0 if the mode was successfully changed or if no mode argument was supplied, and false otherwise.

What's the best linux distro for a computer without an internet connection?

Q. Considering only this as a criterion, what's the best linux distribution that comes to mind?

Thanks

A. A distro that comes on a DVD, not a CD (you get more packages that way) and one that has compiled packages, not some thing that you have to build each package from scratch.

Linux Format and Linux Magazine (out of the UK, not the US mag by the same name) both provide DVDs that mean that criteria.

You can get Ubuntu, Mandriva, Suse, and other such distros like that. Just avoid multi-distro DVDs which have smaller, less complete versions since you won't be able to get online to add or upgrade packages.

What is the best magazine for a web developer out there? web designer magazine and .net magazine are expensive?
Q. I want it to have design and programming articles in it. I have looked at .net magazine and web designer magazine but their subscription is expensive. I have also looked at online magazines but I seem to like reading stuff on paper.

A. Have you tried looking at The Magazine Group (www.benbow.org.uk/Magazines.htm). They have quite a few computer magazine subscriptions that look reasonably priced.

eg "Web Designer", "Web User", "Linux Format", "MSDN Magazine".

Hope you find what you are looking for.

I want to start an online magazine but I'm unfamiliar with the process. Can people offer detailed advices?
Q. I've searched online for tips on how to start up your own online magazine but there are only a few and they only give you a brief outline of it. I was wondering if people can kindly offer me detailed advices or direct me to books or any free sources? Thanks.

A. Hi,

I would suggest you to start your own website. Choose a great name for attracting a lot of people. Choose a design which would match your magazine theme.

I'll describe you it to you:

How to List a Domain Name

There are two principal steps to make your website on the internet and registering/booking a domain name is the number one.
A domain name builds the address of your site and can end in . com, . net, . org, . info, . us, . biz, . tv and further.

Directly afer you have registered your name, you will pick a web host (2nd step). The web host is the guts of any website as this is where you build and publish your pages, build purchase fillings, insert service and preserve your site.

How to Select the Best Domain Name

If being in the foremost search engines (Yahoo!, MSN, etc. ) is tremendously essential to you, I extremely urge you index a name that includes your major keywords as an alternative of your enterprise name.

Imagine about it. The normal visitor searches by theme, not by correct name. So why it may seem cool to have a name corresponding Jack'sLinux. com, you'll wish to select a name that contains keywords that your intended spectators would likely use when they search.

So with that in thinking, a name like Begin-using-Linux. com would be much enhanced than Jack'sLinux. com. Sure, you can still list your corporation name on your web pages, but I think it's more important to make sure the domain name consist of your eminent "search friendly" keywords if you want to receive traffic from all over.

No doubt, you can still register your firm name on the web site some area, but your domain name will consist of all the significant keywords you'll want to be found with.

How to Register a Domain Name

Ordering a domain name is easy and very budget pleasant. You don't need to compensate $35 per year like you would if you listed with big companies.

I'll illustrate you how to save a bundle at http://www.domain-name-register-store.com - and you'll pick up admirable client help desk that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The big name companies cost silly rates such as $30-35/year for an individual domain name, and you gain the matching feature at http://www.domain-name-register-store.com for 60% or even less.

Also now it is promotion time there: Use the code 5NC25 for a discount of 5% for any $25 and up purchase.

So make your move NOW!

Good Luck,
