How does Linux hosting without CPanel look like?

Q. Im new to VPS hosting. I need a linux hosting with php and mysql.

I will not be including CPanel in my hosting. Can I manage or do I have to struggle ?
Can anyone give me a link on how VPS hosting will look like for Linux /

A. Technically speaking, it won't "look" like anything. If the host doesn't provide an alternative web interface to configure it, you will probably have to connect to it using an SSH client. If you do this, you will have a screen similar to the following (depending on the SSH client):

Can I modify a wep page thats on linux hosting using FrontPage?
Q. I´m trying to modify a web page usig FronPage and every time I want to publish the new page I get the message ´´server error.cannot change permissions´´.Anybody knows if this is because the page is on a linux hosting server???

A. yes,

It has been a while since I used frontpage, but when you "open" the site, or create a new website, there should be an option for "FTP" this will allow you to download/upload to your website regardless of windows, linux, mac etc. Your ftp details will have been given by your hosting service when you registered with them.

I hope this helps

I have a windows operating system, I want to start a website.. Can i use a linux host on my OS? I'm sure i can
Q. Well, Planing on opening a video site. For people to upload videos..
And i was checking the host out . Linux hosting. I can use that on a MS machine correct?

A. You def can but I'm not sure if you can test a linux based website on a Windows based computer, locally... This may make it a bit hard to design ???

Could i use linux for light gaming on old computers?

Q. I like to browse the net and also play such games as DDO and LOTRO. I have really old crappy computers, so i think a lighter os would help. They use mainly XP, but some vista, and maybe a 7, but all windows. Some of them can run the games, and there are ways of playing them on linux (wine), so i see no problem with switching, and i am at least mildly compitent with computers. Any thought to convince/deter me, or any ideas on a specific os (ubuntu, mint...)

A. Yes, but it won't improve performance. Unless the game uses and openGL renderer, expect 1/3-1/2 FPS's under WINE.

There is out there a thing called Tiny XP which is XP minus everything you don't need for most games. Illegal if you just download the .iso and install it, but legal if you use your CD, rip it, modify it with special tools, burn it, and install with your own windows key. Something like that or just a fresh install would give you performance as good as your going to get for windows games.

How to install msn instant messenger onto ubuntu?
Q. I just recently got ubuntu and i am having problems installing and downloading files, Does anyone have any clue how to download MSN messenger on ubuntu? When i try the regular way it says i dont have the right stuff to do it, i have hear about doing it using linux wine. but i dont know how to do that, helP!!!!

A. Hey there!

The problem is, Windows Live Messenger doesn't work proporly in Wine yet, So you have two options.

1) Use Pidgin, It's MSN and it comes with Ubuntu! To get to it go to Applications, Internet, Pidgin Instant Messenger and follow the instructions

2) You can get aMSN, It's more MSN Like and supports Webcam. You can install it by Clicking Applications, Accessories, Terminal and copying and pasting the following in:

gksu apt-get install amsn

Then pressing enter. When you are back at the command line (After all the text has finished flashing up), Close your terminal and go to Applications, Internet, aMSN.

Hope I helped! Ubuntu 4eva!

How long does it take to learn how to program using the Linux operating system?

Q. Im trying to learn how to use linux but I dont know how to program where do I start?

A. You start by consulting basic Linux references on how to properly maintain a Linux system. You then learn how to use the Linux command line. Then you learn how to properly install software that allows you to program. Then you learn how to program in whatever language you want to learn; you should learn C if you're dealing with Linux since that's what Linux understands the most: raw power.

What is the best linux distribution for learning to use many?
Q. First, a bit about my background.. I currently work as a Network Engineer, mainly with Cisco routers/switches and VPN devices. I am throughly familiar with Windows, both as a workstation and server, and have one more test to go to complete my MCSE. However, I have no real experience with Linux, and feel like this is both a hole in my personal knowledge and in my resume. :) I can do basic user stuff both from a command line and in Xwindows, but have no real command of it.

That said, I intend to rectify this. I want to start using Linux as my primary operating system on my personal PC, as I feel this is a great first step to really force myself to learn it. I need to know what distribution would be best for me to use. My concern is some of them seem to have alot of propriatary tools that are not found in other linux distros, I want to find one to learn on that will best allow me to be comfortable on any linux distro I run into in the future. Thanks much for your advice!

A. Linux truly is a wonderful operating system! If I'm using a PC, I greatly prefer using it to Windows. It's much more stable, secure, etc. But you already knew that. =]

Personally, I would suggest you start out with OpenSuSE. It's easy to use, yet it is very powerful. Its installer is also pretty easy. I recommend that because a lot of businesses that run Linux on their client systems use SuSE (the only difference between that and OpenSuSE is that SuSE contains closed-source programs; therefore, you have to pay for that distro).

I hope this helps! Good luck!

How much Linux do I know to qualify for some of these jobs out there?
Q. I'm an MCSE/MCITP have my bachelors, and 8 years experience but never touched Linux. I noticed a lot of jobs require some Linux. Obviously I'll never be a guru as I don't use it on the job and never have, but what's a good place to start and how much of it do I need to know to get around comfortably?

A. Get a hold of a few old computers, set up a LAN, and learn how to do anything you can think of. Start learning basic shell commands and how to look up such commands, "man" looks up the manual (docs) for each command, "apropos" searches man pages for a word to find a related command, etc.

If you have a network printer figure out how to use that. Set up apache webserver. Play around with bind9 configuring DNS zones for your LAN. Learn how "samba" interacts with Windows file and printer sharing and WINS. Set up a couple of mail servers using sendmail or postfix and learn how to successfully send mail between them.

And when you get comfortable enough with it, set up a Linux computer as your internet router, masquerading your private LAN from the internet, port forwarding, and other firewall rules (basically learning "iptables").

I am 1700 miles from our factory, so I am not sure what all they use Linux for. But it has been used as a safe public smtp interface for our mail, forwarded into/out of our internal Exchange server. They use Smoothwall Linux for "squid" web proxy (I use IPCop on an old K6-2/400 cpu for squid). Our document retrieval system for literature and drawings is apache webserver in Linux with search pages/scripts written by our network guru.

how do i install itunes 10 on linux ubuntu?

Q. I've used wine and play on linux to download the application, but it just isn't working. Every time I click on the application to open it doesn't open up. Does anyone know what I can do to make it work.
itunes seven is working just fine, but I don't want the old version i want the newer version.

A. I love it when people respond to questions, and have no idea what there talking about.

First make sure you have an up to date copy of WINE and POL, I know the POL in the Ubuntu repos is the older version (at least last time I checked) Same goes for WINE. Make sure your running if from either the WINE menu, or from POL directly. If you just double click the EXE it will run without the switches, and may not work at all. If your doing all of this I'd suggest a complete PURGE not removal of WINE and POL. Don't use Software center, use apt-get. Software center will only remove them

#sudo apt-get purge wine
#sudo apt-get purge playonlinux
#sudo apt-get autoremove
#sudo apt-get autoclean

Make sure there's no hidden folders in your home folder (with a . in front of them) referencing WINE or POL. Alt+H will show them

Download POL from them directly, don't install from the Ubuntu repos. (Current Ver is 3.8.12)
http://www.playonlinux.com

POL Is dependent on WINE, so it will be installed automatically, so will the MS fonts. It should work fine after that.

Banshee has come a long way, not really a need to run iTunes in Linux anymore. I just installed it to see what would happen and it appeared to run fine, imported my music library and played them fine, connected to my ipod etc. You results should be the same. I still like Native software when possible.

How do i find out how much memory my graphic card has ubuntu?
Q. ok im using play on linux and when i am installing steam it asked how much memory my graphic card has and i dont know how to find out help?

A. if it's discrete you should be able to look up the model number to find out.

For integrated, you need to dig in the bios and see how much RAM was set aside for video buffers.

Is it possible to run Ubuntu Linux from an external Hard Drive?
Q. I've been wanting to play around with Linux and learn how to use it. Is it possible to run / boot it from my external USB hard drive? Is this possible to do safely but still use the hard drive for storage when I'm using Vista?

A. Yes, you can run other OSs from removable media. I have heard of some people running Windows XP from a Compact Flash card. You would need to plug the device in, then reboot. You should see your normal BIOS load screen. Press the Setup function key, then select Boot> Boot device. Select USB External HardDrive or whatever, then reboot again.

Good luck

How can I keep my programming lab away from viruses?
Q. I maintain a undergraduate basic computer programming lab.

There are thirty windows PCs. No Internet connections.

Students are allowed to use USB pen drives. So spreading of virus is a common problem. But since Internet is not available, anti-virus software are not used because of the unavailability of frequent update.

Linux is not an option. This is because, we need to run windows-based software.

So what can I do to prevent the spreading of viruses?

A. Disable autorun for USB.

Microsoft also makes a product where all the computers boot from a stable known image on every reboot.

You can also put update detection for many anti-virus programs on a disk and update from that.

How can I install Linux fedora 4 on a computer with out using Virtual PC?

Q. I want to install linux fedora 4 on my computer to make it a server. But i want to do it so that it will run of the harddrive becaause i have a spare 250 gb that i want to use. So how can i put it on the computer itself instead of Virtual PC

A. You could repartition your hard disk, overwrite whatever existing system you have, or install a second hard disk.

Which ever you choose - get a more up to date version then Fedora 4, which is ancient. Go for Fedora 9 instead.

How to preserve "My Documents" while migrating from XP to Linux (Fedora)?
Q. Hi,

I want to get rid of Microsoft XP and install Fedora on my PC.
Is it possible to install LInux (Fedora) on my PC, preserve the contents of My Documents, and not make a backup somewhere out of the hard disk, where I am making the installation?

A. Hi, if you want to backup the files without using another harddrive then I would suggest partitioning your Harddrive before you install Linux.

Go to Start>Run and type "diskmgmt.msc" in the run command. Press Ok and a new window should open. In Disk Management right click the drive you want to partition (usually the C: drive), select "Shrink Volume..." and then enter the amount of space you want to partition in the new window. Make sure it is enough space to copy all your files to. Select "Ok" and a new partition will be created.

Then copy all your files to the new partition, install Linux over the partition where XP is installed, then move all your files from the new partition onto the partition where you replaced XP with Linux, and once all the files are moved back into Linux you can use "parted" or whatever disk partitioning software Linux has to delete the new partition.

As you can see this might be easier if you buy an external drive instead.
