Is installing backtrack effect bios of my system?

Q. someone told me if i install backtrack linux, then i won't be able to install window 7 later i.e it change my all bios settings and i won't recover it later
Is it right or not please tell me soon.

A. It is wrong in that it does not touch your BIOS settings or do anything specifically to disable installing Windows 7. It is somewhat more difficult, but still possible, to install Windows 7 afterward. However, if you have both, you should install Windows 7 first for the easiest dual-boot setup.

How do I switch to backtrack 5?
Q. I want to switch to backtrack 5, but I dont want to lose important files and updates. What exactly does switching my operating system on my laptop do. Can I switch back? And there are many forms of backtrack 5 which should I do please help?

A. I don't "switch to" Backtrack 5. I use it occasionally and I use Linux but I have never installed it as a primary operating system and frankly the idea repulses me.

Burn it to a DVD or install it ot a flash drive using these instructions:

http://www.pendrivelinux.com

then boot boot from it that way. It will never TOUCH your hard drive unless you EXPLICITLY tell it to and your files will be intact.

Alternatively install it on a virtual machine.

Going to school for Computer Information Systems and interested in Security?
Q. I'm currently in the middle of getting my degree at a 2 year community college, my major is Computer Information Systems specializing in IT Support, then transferring to a four year after to continue studies. Iv'e always been interested in Security but unsure of where to start learning about it. A few people have suggested tutorials with Linux Backtrack but I was just curious if anyone could point me in the right direction to learn more about security and working on getting certifications to help stand out when applying for jobs down the road?

A. Hi Alec,

Security is a great area of IT to study. Here is what I would suggest as starting point:
I would first complete the 2 year diploma which you are currently working on before making any significant specializations into IT security. Many people rush into wanting to get on the security side of computing and IT but do not have the basic knowledge to start with. Dependant on what type of security you are looking into I would make sure that you have a thorough understanding of the topics that interest you first.

Then I would start by studying for an IT certification in the Security sector such as the CompTIA Security+ - If you are attending a polytechnic institution then your school may have courses specifically designed to prepare for such certifications. Then you could move onto higher level credentials such as the CEH, CISSP and SSCP. CompTIA certifications are quite common and widely recognized by employers. The CISSP and SSCP are a bit more difficult and require some additional work experience in information security but are very valuable at a later point in time.

My advice to you would be to focus on your university education right now which is invaluable knowledge and provides a well rounded approach. Certifications are great but they do not replace a formal academic education so you are definitely on the right track. I would also take advantage of any security related courses that your school offers. And as mentioned above before you start moving directly into the security side of things I would gain a thorough understanding of the fundamentals such networking, programming the Linux operating system and client/server relationships. Once you have built a strong technical foundation then adding security specialization will not seem like much. Linux and Backtrack tutorials are great, but as mentioned, simply memorizing commands and following tutorials is not as beneficial as actually understanding what you are doing. Security and computer problems in general are presented in so many different ways in the real world so having a the basics down and understanding what is happening first can really help in giving you the ability to tackle any problem that comes your way.

I hope this was able to help and wish you all the best with your studies.

Regards,
Max

Can I install an OS using virtualbox?

Q. I mean can I install the OS on the computer. I want to install backtrack 5 from the live ISO file. Can I boot it in the virtualbox and then install it on my hard disk, to dual boot? How can I do this, instead of actually burning the ISO file onto a CD?

A. You don't dual-boot an OS in VirtualBox. It has to be run after you load your OS which I suppose is Windows or Linux. You may install another OS inside the VirtualBox virtual machine by booting from a virtual drive in the form of an ISO file. You don't need to burn the ISO image to a CD. It will be read directly from where the ISO image is saved in the hard drive. You have to indicate where it is in the hard drive, of course.

Which language is best for creating viruses?
Q. Don't worry, I don't plan to use them in any malicious manor. I just want to experiment with my own computer, and a virtual computer. SO. Of C#, C++, and Visual Basic/VB.Net Which is best for creating viruses?

A. D. None of the above. C# and VB are specifically targeted to Windows Systems and they are literally consumer products. C++ began as a superset of C which is the language UNIX, the first cross-platform Operating System -- so there is some capability but no.

Java Javascript and other such programs are the preferred languages for creating malware (though the saying goes Java is to Javascript as Ham is to Hamster). For this I WOULD say try backtrack linux. Specifically download it as an iso, burn it to a dvd and DO NOT DO what the girl who posted a question this morning did and install it. Run the program OFF the DVD -- boot from it and just don't install. It's for penetration testing and has LOTS of tutorials for understanding the issues.

Hacker wasn't originally and in tech circles still isn't about bad guys. It means hacking away at any problem until you have a workable solution. One old "hacker" tutorial was how to type a hello world executable program into ms-dos from the keyboard. Yes executable -- you didn't need to compile it because it was already in machine code.

As I said C#, VB -- ANY dot Net language is optimized to use the OS on a level which actually discourages some understanding of it. We Linux geeks have tools like nmap which show us vulnerabilities Windows shares but trying to get M$ to talk about securing it runs into rants about "proprietary information" and "security" meaning they just don't want to talk about it at all. Windows tools are not good for Security OR malware until you know how to work against their strengths. C++ is too focused on hardware. Study device-independent scripting languages. Almost all of them are used and most of them are easier for the black hats to use.

Is there a sniffer program for me?
Q. I'm lookin for one that can get passwords from WEP protected Wifi, And i've used backtrack 4 before, and its aite but im lookin for one that i can run in windows, and hopefully noob friendly.

A. its a very simple process but you have to understand that wep cracking is just less efficient under windows than linux because of the differences in what you need the hardware to do and what you can do under winblows.

at a certain point you're gonna have to read up a little, use backtrack then use something called grimwepa
http://code.google.com/p/grimwepa/

after that its literally select network, click crack, done.

windows isn't really a hacking os... at all.

How to type password in BackTrack 4 Linux LOGIN?

Q. I burned Backtrack 4 Linux [Final Release] to a DVD and than i type "login" than enter "root" than I try to enter "toor" but here's the thing, NO KEY REGISTERS INTO IT [as in can't type anything in] I tried this on 2 different computers but same issue, what do i do?

A. you could also boot into linux at a 'lower level' (text only login) which should resolve also.

ctrl + alt then try numbers 1 - 7 until you get lower level. After logging in successfully, run 'startx'

How to actively switch between two OS's in a dualboot partition setup?
Q. I'm dualbooting backtrack and Linux mint KDE 9. Is there a way to switch between the two partitions without having to completely reboot and go through the GRUB menu?

A. Unless you have some sort of virtual machine software you have to reboot so the operating system can have control of the hardware.

Are liberals more likely to use uncommon UNIX or Linux distributions?
Q. I'm a liberal and have three different operating systems. I use FreeBSD, Backtrack Linux and Linux Mint.

Where do you consider yourself to be politically and which Operating System are you currently using?
@ reek - I strongly recommend Linux Mint. It's far better than Windows, and as Linux distributions go it's pretty well mainstreamed for average users.
Windows 8 is awful - I'm convinced it's going to be an even bigger disaster for Microsoft than Vista was. If you have Windows 7 I recommend staying with it.
Unless you're thinking of switching to Linux that is.

A. I'm not liberal, and I use Windows, osX, Linux Mint, Fedora, DSL (Damn Small Linux), openBSD, and for kicks beta test several new trending distros. I also have two old atari's (ST and Falcon) that I use for classic gaming.

How do I boot Backtrack with VMware?

Q. I've downloaded Backtrack Linux, and I've set it up with VMware. When I go to boot it, I've tried it in text mode and safe mode, but I just get the message:
This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
How can I fix this, or get it to boot?

A. The problem is that you have selected to download it as 64-bit. That's too much for the CPU to handle, so you must download 32-bit, when you're on the Backtrack website. I selected, Gnome, 32-bit, ISO, Direct- as my options. And then when I was setting it up, I used Linux OS, then, Other Linux 2.6.x kernel. This fixed everything.

PS, This is actually Flame Sword on another account. I figured out how to fix it, and I wanted to put the correct answer up here for other people to refer to. Thank you!

BackTrack Linux Not Reading Files in Mounted Drive?
Q. I am running BackTrack R2. I recently bought a 1TB Western Digital Passport External Portable HDD. I copied all my stuff into it. It worked fine for 2-3 days.

Now when i connect it to my Laptop, it opens the explorer showing only one folder "System Volume Information". I checked the properties; it still shows that only 500 GB(approx) is free. In terminal, the "ls" command shows that all my files are there. I already tried CTRL-H in the explorer, so hidden files is not an issue. I connected the HDD to a Windows Box and i am able to see all my files properly.

What should i do (besides switching to Windows?? Thanking in Anticipation.

A. 1. The controls for backlights vary . For most systems, you can try adding

Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"

to the Device section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (create it if it doesn't exist).

2. KMix only controls the volume. It doesn't play music. Install / use a media player such as Amarok or Rhythmbox.

what is the different between backtrack and Slackware Linux ?
Q. well i was wondering if you could tell me what is the different between backtrack and Slackware Linux or do they have anything in common

A. Backtrack is a Linux distro on LiveCD with is designed to provide an easy way to do security testing (such as penetration testing on a network). I don't think it's used as a regular, installable distro.

Slackware is a full-blown Linux distribution which has been around since about 1993. Slack is one of the oldest existing Linux distributions, and is one of my favorites, especially for server use.

Backtrack was, according to what I read, based on SLAX, which was a derivative of the original Slackware.

Try reading here. This distribution is based on slackware Linux and it CAN be difficult for beginners. If I were to recommend a distr for a "newbie" it'd be PCLinuxOS or Freespire. they're TRULY "newbie-friendly" distros.
Hope you have MANY years of fun and learning Linux!

A. Hi
Try this

Backtrack is to advanced for a new linux user.
I think I have answered you before

How do you install Backtrack 3 to a hard drive without wiping the data?
Q. I have Windows Vista and Ubuntu already as boot options and I want to add Backtrack 3 as another boot option. I already have the iso downloaded. I've searched around but all the tutorials I have read don't tell me how to boot into the 3rd option (VESA/KDE) or their instructions would wipe my hard drive.Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

A. hmmm.... try to install it under a new partition behind windows using windows free space.

2. sometimes grub acts bad and don't want to let you run windows after this so to fix this problem run ubuntu live cd and follow this tutorial. it should fix. the problem with your grub menu list. here is a video on how to do it the grub fix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtBBl6HvdpM&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fuser%2FNixiePixel&feature=player_profilepage

3. this should work remember to rate. i would like to know if it works still it work for me in the past with fedora, win, ubuntu. note:::::

The best way to install any three OS would be Windows first, some linux distro, then ubuntu. (they do a great job grub)

4. if your scared to do it this way try a virtual machine

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/ you can run it inside of windows.

Good luck remember to rate.

what is the different between backtrack and Slackware Linux ?

Q. well i was wondering if you could tell me what is the different between backtrack and Slackware Linux or do they have anything in common
