Any good linux distro for an old Pentium III Computer?

Q. I have an old Pentium III computer with 128mb of RAM in it. What would be a good linux to put in it. I hate DSL and Puppy and I love a lot of ready to use programs. (Ubuntu Alternative maybe like CrunchBang Linux?)

A. I thoroughly recommend taking a look at Linux Mint 6 Felicia Fluxbox Community Edition http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_felicia_fluxbox_whatsnew.php

System Requirements

x86 processor
128 MB of system memory (RAM)
2 GB of disk space for installation
VGA graphics card capable of 800x600 resolution
CD-ROM drive

Download http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=35

LUg.

On crunchbang Linux everything is incredibly small and I can't see a thing. Is there any fix?
Q. I'm unable to do anything with my crunchbang. Please help.

A. Most solutions require that you are able to see a menu item or open a terminal and type a command since you cannot see ANYTHING the only solution is to reinstall it and be aware of any options for font size and video formats when you do.
Good luck

is it possible to update crunchbang linux whilst running it from usb?
Q. i run my crunchbang from usb (to avoid the bothersome choice everytime i turn on my computer) is there any way for the updates to stick whilst running it from the usb?

A. No. I'm guessing that your distribution is running from an image on the USB. You'd have to update a real installation and create a new Live USB image.

And is the choice more bothersome than not being able to keep your distribution up to date?

Could I build a Linux system on my old Pentium 1 PC?

Q. It's been sitting around in my basement for years, but I think it still works. Just the OS (Win95) is corrupt so it won't boot. I have been interested in Linux for a while, but couldn't risk a primary PC to play around. I just thought of using my old Pentium PC.

If I recall, I can boot in a DOS Safe mode. How would I get started?

A. Okay!!!
Yes.
Now... Modern Linux.. Your Ubuntus and your Mints and Fedoras and such.. they are also going to be too much for that p1 to swallow.

Guess at specs here but lets shoot low.

you have 3 gig hdd, 128 megs ram, clock speed 166 mhz. MMX processor.

I'd try CrunchBang, (#!) or DSL, or Feather.
http://crunchbanglinux.org/
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
http://featherlinux.berlios.de/

The installs on those are going to be a bit harder than a modern distro on a modern computre, but the benefit is, (besides a working computer) by the time you get it all set up, you'll actually have a pretty good idea of how to drive.

HP Pavilion DV6000 Wifi not working with Crunchbang Linux?
Q. Just installed crunchbang on my hp pavilion dv6000 and wifi is not working but ethernet is. What packages do i need to download?

A. I think you need the b43-fwcutter package.

Im scared to by a laptop because of windows. How do i return windows and us linux instead?
Q. Ive been told it's a difficult thing to do - return windows. Does anyone have experience with this issue?

A. These people are wrong. It is illegal to use Windows if you can't read, understand, and agree to the EULA. If you don't agree to the EULA (you have to agree to the licence, to have your operating system on loan and not own it, grant Microsoft the right to have backdoors into your private system etc) - then you are not legally allowed to use it. People are ignorant, they ignore this and just think it's okay to use it anyway. Stupid people! So if you refuse the EULA, you're entitled to a refund BUT the vendor will charge you more to remove it than you'll save.... (source - German friend who bought from Dell, he paid $75 extra)

You can try to order your laptop - depending on where you live. Some friends of mine (one in Germany, the other in UK) bought Dell xps1330 computers with linux installed.

It wasn't cheaper, but they were happy that Microsoft didn't manage to force them to pay a tax!!! That's right, even if you delete Windows after buying it, you still paid Microsoft!!!

You cn try to buy a laptop with NO operating system (freedos or whatever) but in the end, you're better off playing around.

If you get some experience, then you can install something like 'crunchbang' linux, which is so light on resources - it would make your computer work ten times better than with XP. So fast it makes your nose bleed!

If you want features, then I'd recommend Ubuntu. There's a 'eeepc remix' which can install from USB with some skill...

but basically, install Ubuntu yourself isn't too hard - just check forums for problems with certain laptops - or just call up Dell and tell them you want Ubuntu preinstalled, and ask what models they're offering (easy in USA I think - strange how USA doesn't force Microsoft on their customers - but I know that DELL UK are very arsey about it, and can be rather abrupt on the phone!)

Go for it - my ubuntu desktop has been getting faster all year long - ready to upgrade to Jaunty very soon, exciting ;) but I do keep XP installed, as I have a good graphics card and run windows games. (I disabled internet for XP and it has a 40GB space on the drive - the rest of the 320GB drive is for linux - the filesystem never let me down).

Good luck, enjoy ;) any problems, buzz me or just get down to ubuntuforums

click the link and make an account ;) keep in touch

How can i tell which files a specific process is using in ubuntu?
Q. I am trying to find out where a temp file for a program is being stored. im sure linux has a way of doing this (seemingly?) simple task.

thanks

A. I have 'conky' set up to give me information about top processes as part of my wallpaper - but I think for detail, you can go through GUI or terminal, up to you. You should search for information about conky in Crunchbang forums.

If you prefer mousey answers, then using GUI - open system monitor (add it to your panel, right click and open from there maybe) - processes, and view 'command line'

Problem is that GUI affects your system too much, so better open terminal (install terminator, it's very cool, also install cowsay cos that's really cool too)

type 'htop'

if it isn't installed, your terminal will tell you exactly how to get it ;)

I'm apt to think you'll get my meaning B-)

With terminator, you can actually run HTOP, and you can remove the scrollbar and window border too - and actually have just a display like a widget on your desktop. To move windows with no decoration, you press a modifier (usually ALT and drag with the mouse, but if you had problems with GIMP shortcuts, you should change the function for 'move' window to use 'ctrl+alt')

Ok? anything else? :P

What was your opinion when you upgraded from XP to Ubuntu?
Q. I am wondering what you think of Ubuntu when you upgraded from the outdated and insecure XP.

I used Ubuntu, and find it is far more complete and more secure then anything ever seen from Microsoft.

You can actually use it without no security software because everyone targets Windows.

I will never go back to Windows. (Note: This is from a person who said a few months back that "Linux is for script kiddies" or "Linux is only used to inflate your computer ego".

A. I really wasn't impressed when I installed Ubuntu 7.04 from a CD. I was happy with the 25 minutes installation time, but then had loads of stupid problems - firstly I couldn't connect to wireless internet, and then I had problems trying to mount things, and found that I had to manually edit text files to set some things up....

What else - well the first thing that started to change my mind is that whilst editing one text file, I restarted and had no desktop - it wouldn't load at all, and I decided to try something. I'd set up an alias already 'sudo apt-get install' is just 'install' on my system.

I typed 'install gnome-desktop'

And it did. Wow. Then with Ubuntu 8.10 most of the issues were ironed out - just eight months later!!! Hard drives just appear and I could just format to NTFS if I wanted to, great - good for USB's.

I still have XP - but gradually I used it less, and less, and less - and now it's only for Windows games - I disabled the networking. Ubuntu works perfectly straight from a fresh install of Jaunty 9.04 - Printer, Wifie, Monitor - everything is perfect from the start.

Summary - I wasn't impressed when I first tried Ubuntu, it's too different and seems harder.

Now, however, I laugh at the amount of time I took to install XP last year, because Ubuntu installs in 25 minutes - including drivers for most stuff (nVidia is a 5 minutes download, and I have .deb installers for my printer).

I also have XP in a virtualbox for anyting that refuses to run on ubuntu and has no decent replacement (i.e. ACDSee Pro2 for moving pictures from Camera to Computer because it has a couple of killer lighting adjustment tools).

I never missed Photoshop, it is too hard and complicated - and I learned to do ten times as much stuff in GIMP in just 6 months using it (than with 3 years working with Photoshop)

Then, of course, sekurity - forgot even how to spell that. Why do you need to worry about security with your computer? just make a strong password and it's finished right? Surely nobody would ship an operating system that is Insecure by default!!!

But I can tell you, if you get interested in something like 'conky' you'll start getting really interested to edit a text file and make it your own (google search for 'crunchbang' and 'conky' and find a really cool forum for it.

Mac is for inflating ego - Mac is the BMW (based on freeBSD actually, but with layers on top that aren't open) and priced like a Benz - it's over priced and fine for poseurs everywhere.

I actually like the Mac 'globalmenu' concept, so I found out how to install it on Ubuntu - nice way to save on vertical screenspace.

Join the party, go to linuxoutlaws.com and sign up for their very funny podcast (they do a really cool 'microwatch' section every week)>

You'll love it, it's a real blast :P

BTW - never use 'Automatix' but DO use 'Ubuntu Tweak'

xp / linux dual boot, why does windows change the clock to the wrong time?

Q. I have an Asus eee 900a running tiny xp on the ssd and crunchbang linux on the SD card. Sometimes when I boot into windows it changes the clock making it incorrect. I change it but it eventually changes itself back again. Why is it doing this?

A. The convention under windows is that the computer's real-time clock maintains local time. Under UNIX and Linux, the convention is that the real-time clock maintains Greenwich Mean Time. So when you switch back and forth, it's common that your clock is off by your offset from GMT under one of the OSes. The way you can avoid this problem is to tell your Linux system that you want the RTC to maintain local time rather than GMT, just like the Windows convention.

In your distro of Linux, you would edit /etc/rc.conf, and set

HARDWARECLOCK" = "localtime"

rather than

HARDWARECLOCK" = "UTC"

Your Linux system is probably using NTP to sync the time, so even though it is a few hours off right after you boot, it gets the correct time a little while later. However, it is always off when you boot.

How do i get linux the newest one on my windows xp without a cd?
Q. can u give me steps plzzz!??!!??
i wanna get linux mint but it has a dvd and a cd download which one do i use?
actually which one do ppl prefer linux mint or ubuntu?

A. If you decide on Linux Mint, you can download the CD version and then select "Upgrade to the DVD edition" after installation. A script will run that will automatically bring in all the extra packages that come with the DVD version.

I use both Ubuntu and Mint (along with 4-5 other distros like Crunchbang and openSUSE); for the Linux beginner I would suggest Mint. It includes many of the audio/video codecs that Windows users expect to have pre-installed, they have a site that features good documentation and a friendly forum, and their is generally less to "set up" than what you get with a fresh install of Ubuntu.

Without a CD? You can always use a USB flashdrive. Or install it using either WUBI or Mint4Win inside your existing Windows system. Or if you have a virtual machine on XP, you can install and play around with it there.

What operating system should i run on my netbook?
Q. I have a Samsung NC110 Netbook, 2GB ram, Item atom dual core processor, 320gb hard drive with win 7 starter and its just too slow. SO WHAT IS THE FASTEST OPERATING SYSTEM FOR A NETBOOK. PREFERABLY LINUX...PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

A. crunchbang or bohdi are fast.

Stupid people! xp / linux dual boot, why does windows change the clock to the wrong time?

HARDWARECLOCK" = "localtime"

rather than

HARDWARECLOCK" = "UTC"

Your Linux system is probably using NTP to sync the time, so even though it is a few hours off right after you boot, it gets the correct time a little while later. However, it is always off when you boot.
