how do i install itunes 10 on linux ubuntu?

Q. I've used wine and play on linux to download the application, but it just isn't working. Every time I click on the application to open it doesn't open up. Does anyone know what I can do to make it work.
itunes seven is working just fine, but I don't want the old version i want the newer version.

A. I love it when people respond to questions, and have no idea what there talking about.

First make sure you have an up to date copy of WINE and POL, I know the POL in the Ubuntu repos is the older version (at least last time I checked) Same goes for WINE. Make sure your running if from either the WINE menu, or from POL directly. If you just double click the EXE it will run without the switches, and may not work at all. If your doing all of this I'd suggest a complete PURGE not removal of WINE and POL. Don't use Software center, use apt-get. Software center will only remove them

#sudo apt-get purge wine
#sudo apt-get purge playonlinux
#sudo apt-get autoremove
#sudo apt-get autoclean

Make sure there's no hidden folders in your home folder (with a . in front of them) referencing WINE or POL. Alt+H will show them

Download POL from them directly, don't install from the Ubuntu repos. (Current Ver is 3.8.12)
http://www.playonlinux.com

POL Is dependent on WINE, so it will be installed automatically, so will the MS fonts. It should work fine after that.

Banshee has come a long way, not really a need to run iTunes in Linux anymore. I just installed it to see what would happen and it appeared to run fine, imported my music library and played them fine, connected to my ipod etc. You results should be the same. I still like Native software when possible.

How do i find out how much memory my graphic card has ubuntu?
Q. ok im using play on linux and when i am installing steam it asked how much memory my graphic card has and i dont know how to find out help?

A. if it's discrete you should be able to look up the model number to find out.

For integrated, you need to dig in the bios and see how much RAM was set aside for video buffers.

Is it possible to run Ubuntu Linux from an external Hard Drive?
Q. I've been wanting to play around with Linux and learn how to use it. Is it possible to run / boot it from my external USB hard drive? Is this possible to do safely but still use the hard drive for storage when I'm using Vista?

A. Yes, you can run other OSs from removable media. I have heard of some people running Windows XP from a Compact Flash card. You would need to plug the device in, then reboot. You should see your normal BIOS load screen. Press the Setup function key, then select Boot> Boot device. Select USB External HardDrive or whatever, then reboot again.

How do I install Ubuntu Linux to my PC when I have two Hard Drives and don't need to partition?

Q. I've been looking at the Ubuntu Linux site for a while, they tell you how to partition a drive, but not how to set it up for two HD's with a choice of which to boot on startup.

I know I could have the BIOS always pop up on powerup, but is there an easier way?

A. It still need to partition the drive used for Ubuntu.
Actually if you have something on the other drive like Windows, the Ubuntu will put it in the Grub boot Menu. I have XP on one drive and Ubuntu on the other on one of my computers. One word of advise, Windows doesn't play well with others, it will overwrite Grub on other drive without a second thought. So if you reinstall/install Windows unplug the Ubuntu drive during install. If your starting out from scratch install Windows first then Ubuntu, it will save the step of editing /etc/grub/menu.lst to add Windows boot item.

How Much Memory Does Vista and Xp Recognize At Max?
Q. I found a motherbord with 6 240-pin slots and a maximum of supporting 16 gigs of memory. Now if i put in 6 to 12 gigs of ram can vista and xp recognise and use this when playing games? Can linux use all of this? Is there a hack, mod, or patch i can download for each windows and then they will both use up all the memory?

A. You can use all of the RAM if you get a 64-bit version of XP or Vista. The only downside is that most programs don't work for 64-bit right now. Most all operating systems are 32-bit.

But really, you won't need it for playing games. I have 4GB of RAM, and I've never gotten anywhere close to max when I play games (even Crysis). I think the most I've ever used was 2.3GB when I was opening every program I had.

My suggestion: Get Windows XP 32-bit, 4GB of RAM, and start gaming. A few years from now, everything will be optimized for 64-bit, and we can switch over.

What are the pros and cons of switching TO Linux FROM Windows?
Q. For someone who's good with computers and uses a new-ish personal desktop for several hours a day, mostly on the Internet.
By "Linux" I mean whatever version is easiest for a newcomer to it and by "Windows" I mean Windows 7.
Switching and adjusting isn't an issue, I'm mainly referring to the pros and cons of the general operating systems themselves.
Thanks in advance.

A. Easiest Linux is Ubuntu, in my opinion. Software is made available very simply.

I tried to do what you propose, and found Linux too limited. It wasn't the OS, but all the channels I knew were to deliver Windows content. So I gave up too easily. I dual boot, and use Linux to repair whatever Windows infections I or neighbors get.

Linux is less prone to virus, at least until more people move onto it.

[EDIT:

Sorry, forgot cons...
- cannot (yet) buy software for Linux in local stores,
- cannot play your favorite Windows games without an emulator (which may require you to do a lot of tweaking),
- Linux is a console-based OS, with a windowed wrapper, so when you are tweaking, you will likely be doing this at a console,
- your office apps are usually not available, which requires retraining,
- cooperating between Windows (your clients) and Linux can be a bit taxing.

How do you change your operating system from Windows to Linux?

Q. is Linux worth getting by the way is it better than Windows?

A. no its not better then windows.... anyone who says it is, is nothing more then some nub linux fanboy who think they are a pro hacker because they use ubuntu...

Windows has its purposes, mac ha its purposes, and linux has its purposes, none are any better then each other.
You use the one that that is best suited for what you are doing.

windows = design (image editing, video editing, music editing, music creation, 3d modeling) and gaming.

mac = design (image editing, video editing, music editing, music creation, 3d modeling) and its more user friendly

linux = well its 100% free, but hard to narrow down on a few things as there are many different distros for many different tasks. but has NO professional software, and NO gaming support.
linux is usually best run through a virtual machine under windows. (that way you can play games use professional software, and use linux when needed)

I am a linux poweruser, and a windows power user, i know both OS VERY well.
I dont even multi boot linux anymore, since most of my work, can be done through windows, and i can always boot linux in a virtual machine. have a few linux distros live cds on dvds and flash drives to be able to boot off if i need to.

(and since im sure some will come here to answer this question)
The nub linux fanboys will try and boast about how great linux is, but linux was NEVER meant for the mainstream of society in computers (ya phones run linux, but its a phone not a computer).
And i always love how they say thing like "linux is faster and doesnt get viruses", as that statement always make me shake my head... as if you really are using linux because of viruses... you are fking retarded anyway.

Also WINE, which is a windows emulator for linux, is NOT EVEN CLOSE to being as good as its talked up to be.... it can only run a handful of games/professional software, and it runs them all poorly at best (lots of problems with features, tools, or crashing). why the hell would you use WINE when you can use windows which has 100% compatibility with windows software...

and virtual machines dont have very good hardware acceleration or opengl support, so running windows in a virtual machine in linux, tho better then wine, is still not very good.

EDIT: what happened to the guy with the answer saying how great linux is and he can play wow PERFECTLY with wine?

how do i install mandriva 2009 linux inside windows so i can dual boot each of them?
Q. I am wanting to start using linux but i dont want to lose vista. How can i dual boot Mandriva. I have tried ubuntu and it does not work so i thought i would try something different.

A. If you want to actually run it inside Vista without affecting the operating system, you need to run a Virtual Program of some kind. I really don't know much about those programs.

If it is a LiveCD don't even load it until you are sure that is what you want. First you need to resize the Vista partition to create enough space to Load Mandriva onto. Once that is done you can install it using the custom install command, not the use existing space or the whole drive. It should set up dual boot automatically.

I'm running PCLinuxOS 2009-1 which is Mandriva based. It has some programs called OnPlay that allows you to Play games with a Linux System and a few other interesting programs.

How to get diner dash to play linux?
Q. Have linux on my computer i want to play diner dash... i have tried wine and all that crap currently wine wont open anything so i am very unhappy. i have also tried virtual box i am on linux 10.4 and stupid virtual box will not install windows it gets half way and stops.

A. Try the program PlayOnLinux. if that does not work than I believe you are out of luck. Dont leave Linux though. Because are gaming base with double within the next 3 month. Valve is currently working on steam for linux. This will give us a big library of games.

(ii) If you want to connect your computer with WIFI, internet, then many a times it has seen that Linux flavors create lots of flavours, as required drivers are not shipped with pakages, you need to download from respective linux forums. No such problem arises with Mandriva, it supports all the drivers to connect with internet, broadcom, WIFI, everything.

What's the difference between the cd and dvd versions of Knoppix?

Q. I want to use Knoppix, just to play around with linux a little. But I noticed there are two versions of it. CD and DVD. Obviously the DVD version is much, much, larger. Besides the obvious size difference, what separates the CD version from the DVD on.

A. the dvd version has more software,

knoppix is not really a good idea if you want to 'mess' with linux, you can access your normal system and delete thing that will make it useless,

best idea is install virtualbox

http://www.virtualbox.org/

then download and install one of the free distro's in a virtual machine, then you can 'mess' till you brake it, without breaking your host (normal) system

Any mac users out there upset with their machines?
Q. Obviously not a scientific study, but I want to know any stories about people who regret buying a mac. I've run Windows since I gave up on OS/2, and I've played with Linux, but I've never considered buying a mac until recently. Anybody sad that they bought a mac?

A. There are 2 desktops and 2 laptops in this house. One desktop runs Windows because I have one highly-specialized piece of software that'll only run on Windows. It only gets used when I need that bit of software. One laptop runs Windows solely because I haven't gotten around to installing Linux on it yet and so it lies fallow waiting for better days. The other desktop runs Linux (the second most used computer) and my most-used computer (this laptop, in fact) is an Apple. I love my Apple! I love my Linux box for different reasons, but after finally getting my hands on this MacBook Pro, I really don't want to use another computer. Ever. I'll always have Linux boxes around, but I'll also always have an Apple from here on in.

How to find what video file format a file is apart from the extension of the file itself?
Q. For example, I have an avi file....It plays in linux using SMPlayer front end...but the video does not play on Windows (VLC player)....the audio is heard though.
When you play the file in VLC Player, and press CTRL-I, it will show up the information and it will also show the encoding of the video file, for example: XVID, etc

A. I have been wondering about this myself, and have had very little luck finding a simple answer, if any at all. I myself have .avi files that when changed to the .mpeg extension somehow still play properly, yet cannot be burned using Nero, etc. as either one.

i thought i clicked on general computers, not sure how this ended up in womens health?

A. You can't run Grand Chase on Linux. You can only run it on Windows.

What is the best portable Linux for Windows Lover?
Q. I am looking to play around with Linux and I am wonder which one of the portable Linuxes would be the best for someone who is used to Windows.

A. Hii,

You can Use MANDRIVA, it has the almost same features like windows, I mean myself and many of my friend are using it, and we had find it better over other flavours of linux. Like for Instance.. following are the main features, that we have find Mandriva Linux working as Windows :

(i) No need to download additional packages or plugins to play any audio or video files. As you require in other flavours. for instance in fedora and Ubuntu
(iii) Its packages provide web-cam software as well, where you can even click funny photographs with the software.
(iv) INSTALLATION : easy to install, if compared with other Linux flavours, exception : Ubuntu
(v) Desktop features ,GUI, Terminal are very friendly, and can be easily understood by normal users.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE : If you are looking for powerful desktop features, more animations, more powerful animations and appearance than Windows Vista. Namely you want to concentrate more on looks, graphics and animation feature, go for UBUNTU, provided that you are not looking for more features.

What is the Net View command for linux?

Q. I have been playing around with Linux a lot lately. What is the linux net view equivalent? I can't figure it out for the life of me.

A. If you are talking about a TCP/IP Networks you have a bunch of commands that can act like Netview:

users
groups - Print group names a user is in
hostname - Print or set system name
id - Print user and group id's
logname - Print current login name
printenv - Print environment variables.
uname - Print system information
who - Print who is currently logged in
whoami - Print the current user id and name (`id -un')
who

Now, if you want a command to see network share devices in a MS-Network you should use Samba.

I hope this help you.

Are there any stacker games that play on Linux OS?
Q. My 5 year old's computer runs on Linux OS. Its a Dell computer and can he download any Super Stacker games on it?

A. These seem to all be online flash games. Just install Adobe Flash on the computer (it is probably there already) and load up the page and play the games.

Is it possible to play games on Linux? And if so, where and how do i download and install it?
Q. I have heard that Linux is way better than Windows, but i'm a gamer and i want to know if i can play games and such on Linux.

A. Linux is a better OS than Windows in a large number of ways, but it is NOT a better choice for gamers for at least two reasons.

The first reason is that very few games are written specifically for Linux, and the second reason is that games written for Windows can only be played on Linux if you use a "compatibility layer" such as Wine - these compatibility layers are not 100% foolproof and are not compatible with all games.

If you mainly use your computer for non-gaming purposes, then maybe you could get away with running only Linux and then using Wine for the odd one or two games that you do want to play. If you're a hardcore gamer however, then you should keep Windows as your main gaming OS and then "dual boot" your machine with Linux if you want to try that out.

how do i install itunes 10 on linux ubuntu?
