Is it unavoidable to need to use the terminal on linux mint?

Q. I am thinking of downloading linux mint as on OS but I am not good with computer terminals. What is it used for?

A. Linux Mint has a feature called mintInstall
http://www.linuxmint.com/blog/?p=239

Menu>Administration>mintInstall

mintInstall allows you to Add and Remove software without going anywhere near the Terminal

How can I start Linux and what distribution do you think I should use?
Q. I want to use Linux because I have heard that it is significantly better than IE. My entire family is technologically inept and we only have one computer. How do you think I should start and what distribution do you recommend for a beginner who plans on programming and the like?Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

A. I thoroughly recommend two Linux distros.

Linux Mint 9 Main Edition which is based upon Ubuntu 10.04

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) which is based upon Debian Lenny/Squeeze

Both are easy to install and use plus they come with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

HowTo install Nvidia Graphics Drivers on Debian
http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Installapre-builtmodule

Alternatively install Linux Mint as a dual-boot with Windows using mint4win without partitioning mint4win works the same as Wubi as described below (not available on Linux Mint Debian)
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 or Linux Mint Debian then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD/DVD for installation

Linux Mint 9 and Linux Mint Debian can also be run direct from the LiveCD/DVD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

How do I install programs on linux? It always goes to archive manager with soo many files in it?
Q. When I download software, it usually goes to archive manager
I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and I need to know how to install programs.
Can someone tell me how to install software on Ubuntu?

A. Most of the installation of software in Ubuntu is done within the Synaptic Package Manager

Here is the Official Ubuntu Synaptic Package Manager Documentation
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto

If you download a deb. package which is native to Ubuntu there is the GDebi Package Installer

Why is my bandwidth limited so much in windows?

Q. I have been switching between linux and windows for a while now while I learn a little bit more about linux to where I can make a perminant switch.

When using Linux my download speeds would get up to the 900KBPS speed they are supposed to but in windows it is limited to a very sad 100KBPS for no good reason.

Is there a way to fix this problem?

This is with a fresh windows install (about an hour ago) so its not bugged.

A. Are you using a download manager of some sort?

I'm not sure how Linux works but some download managers (IDM) are really good. They are able to download the file in parts which means that you're downloading at probably 5 or 6 times the normal speed.

Downloading through a browser just downloads the file as a whole and this takes a lot longer.

how do i install itunes 10 on linux ubuntu?
Q. I've used wine and play on linux to download the application, but it just isn't working. Every time I click on the application to open it doesn't open up. Does anyone know what I can do to make it work.
itunes seven is working just fine, but I don't want the old version i want the newer version.

A. I love it when people respond to questions, and have no idea what there talking about.

First make sure you have an up to date copy of WINE and POL, I know the POL in the Ubuntu repos is the older version (at least last time I checked) Same goes for WINE. Make sure your running if from either the WINE menu, or from POL directly. If you just double click the EXE it will run without the switches, and may not work at all. If your doing all of this I'd suggest a complete PURGE not removal of WINE and POL. Don't use Software center, use apt-get. Software center will only remove them

#sudo apt-get purge wine
#sudo apt-get purge playonlinux
#sudo apt-get autoremove
#sudo apt-get autoclean

Make sure there's no hidden folders in your home folder (with a . in front of them) referencing WINE or POL. Alt+H will show them

Download POL from them directly, don't install from the Ubuntu repos. (Current Ver is 3.8.12)
http://www.playonlinux.com

POL Is dependent on WINE, so it will be installed automatically, so will the MS fonts. It should work fine after that.

Banshee has come a long way, not really a need to run iTunes in Linux anymore. I just installed it to see what would happen and it appeared to run fine, imported my music library and played them fine, connected to my ipod etc. You results should be the same. I still like Native software when possible.

Is there a Linux version of jailbreak downloads for idevices?

Q. I have an Acer Chromebook and i want java for like oovoo and some other apps. I understand you download the Linux java download. But when i download that it says i have to download an app that can open java. What is that app called?

A. Chrome devices have Flash support built-in, but they do not support Java or Silverlight. Where to Download UNIX and What Version or Kind?

Q. I've tried to google some sites where to download UNIX and just can't seem to find one. Also some Yahoo answers keep showing LINUX download website links not UNIX. And if I found one there were lots of choices. I'm just starting to learn how to program so please help ^^ thanks in advance

A. Linux just the name of a free Unix. There's no one "true" Unix. There are HPUX (Hewlett Packard Unix), AIX (IBM's Unix), MacIntosh is Unix, all of the Linuxes, all of the BSD's, Solaris (Sun Microsystems's Unix), and more. Here is a Unix "Family Tree":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Unix_history-simple.svg

Your free choices are:

1. Any of the various Linux flavors. For beginners, or for experts wanting a nice desktop or programming platform, I recommend Ubuntu ( http://www.ubuntu.com ). After you install it, be sure to do this at the command line:

sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

For servers, I recommend CentOS ( http://www.centos.org/ ).

2. Solaris is free: http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp

3. Any of the BSD's. FreeBSD is the most popular. There's also NetBSD, but I recommend OpenBSD ( http://www.openbsd.org ) because it has the best track record of any operating system for security (only two remote exploits in over ten years).

For servers, I recommend OpenBSD over CentOS or Linux for security reasons; however, OpenBSD isn't supported by VMware; so if you're running your server in VMware, then CentOS is the way to go. If you want the best possible file system performance for a database, then Solaris is the way to go (be sure to read up on ZFS first).

Back to the point of your question: For your purposes, I recommend Ubuntu. Don't forget the following command lines (the first installs compilers and C libraries, the second installs the Adobe Flash player, Java, and some other goodies):

sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

For your IDE, if you're not into Eclipse, then try Bluefish (sudo apt-get install bluefish).

A. Chrome devices have Flash support built-in, but they do not support Java or Silverlight. If you need Java, Silverlight, or other plug-in support, there are virtualization and remoting options you can use for Chrome devices.
